I have been trying to ID my new Tridacna and so far I have convinced myself it is at least two different species so I am stumped. I'm usually really good at IDing just about everything, but not clams. Now I know it has no foot but I have hear before that some species don't have a foot. So far I have had read several more places that say some species will loose the foot and rely on weight to stay in place.

Also it has been suggested to me that this may be a hybrid.

The length is about 8"

Here are the pics:

Hmm only reason I think that is cause it kinda looks like one in the first pic, right side. Not very pronounced though I agree.

I know what you are seeing but I have had squammys before and the scutes can be up to an inch long. Maybe some others will chime in about it. I'm not a clam ID expert by any means.

Appears to be Tridana gigas by the pics. Not closing tightly, lack of scutes and byssal opening. It could also be a hybrid of T. gigas and T. derasa if it also has siphonal tentacles.

This is the hybrid combination that has been suggested to me for that exact reason. You can see the siphonal tentacles in pic #2 .

Didn't see that pic last time I had the thread open, the firewall at work is sometimes sporadic in blocking pictures :)

In that case, I'm more strongly leaning towards a hybrid of the two.

If anyone else has a different opinion feel free to share but I've had a few more people say they think it's a hybrid on another forum.

I was thinking derasa/gigas hybrid just from the pics. Cool find.

By the way I'm impressed at the photo quality... considering you're holding the clam with both hands! Did you hold the camera with your teeth?
