I'm getting ready to start my upgrade to a 90 with a 40 gallon breeder sump.

I already have the 90 gallon and the 40 breeder sump. However I need to modify my sump for saltwater since I was initially using it for my freshwater planned tank sump.

I have put together a list of things I plan to get. Suggestions, comments, and opinions are welcome.

Tunze osmulator 3155 sku# 202307
$209.99 ( bulk reef supplies )

Hydra 52 ( 2 ) 599.00 ( Dr.Fosters #CD-87613 )

Hydra 52 controller sku #204359 $79.99

Hydra 52 mounting kit 48' sku #204439 ( no need since I'm building a canopy ) $59.99

Super Reef Octopus XP1000SSS 6†Space Saver Cone Skimmer
sku#204069 ( bulk reef supplies ) $419 99

20 gallon tank ( as ato reservoir )

60lbs of live rock @ 5.99 = $360

American Dj Pc-100A Rack Mount Power Switcher $29.99 ( amazon )

Screen lids kits ( no need since I'm building a canopy )

Hawaiian black substrate 20lbs $19.88ea; 80lbs $79.52 ( Dr. Fosters )

Salt water $1.00 per gallon; 90 gal $90.00

Mag drive - return sump pump ( pet solutions, Dr. Fosters ) unsure what size pump I need at the moment

Hydro smart wave pump - if needed ( bulk reef supplies, pet solutions, Dr. Fosters ) may need addition pumps if my two 600 are to small

Reef octopus heater control $80 ( pet shop )

Maggie muffler for stand pipe drain ( ?$ )

Total cost $2357.60

30 rimless frag tank
No sure which model to get.

Eshopps Hang-On Protein Skimmer ( Dr foster )
Psk - 75h CD-70091,***$169.99
Psk - 100h CD-70092,***$179.99

My sump I will be modifying to look like this

Live rock from livaquaria is a lot less than $6/lb iirc.
Nice sized sump, why the blue balls? A refugeium or waterfall ATS might be more effective at nutrient export.
I have no experience with Hydra products, although I have used and love Kessil and Reef Radiance lighting.

Thanks. The sump is a 40 breeder. I found the picture on one of the forums I am on I can't remember which one. It will drain in the filter socks through the baffles. The blue balls are bio balls. The through the next section of baffles into the skimmer section through baffles again into the return pump.

It was suggested that do bio balls however I will still have live rock in the sump I am thinking below the filter socks.

The only thing I'm stuck on is whether to you glass for the baffles or acrylic.

I have a hydra 52 on my 30 rimless which I fell in love with.

I will have to keep that in mind about the live rock. Now my question is would I have to cure the live rock or is it already cured.

I now see what the ats waterfall is. I had to look it up. Hmm I will have to think of that. I would still like to keep my current setup for my sump but some how incorporate the ats water fall some how.

I don't think you need live rock and bioballs........I would just have live rock or a ball of cheato in place of the bioballs.

Cheato is a form of macro algae correct. If I did do the cheato would I need a light over my sump for it.

I will keep that in mind about the bio balls or live rock not both.

I'm glad I'm asking questions. I don't want to do something that I don't need to do or is a waste I am open for suggestions. I want to do things right. I don't want to mess this up like I did with my 30 rimless which I crashed bad information that caused it.

Started building my stand. I think I need a ladder. Lol.
L = 73 1/4
H = 43
D = 22 1/4

It will accommodate the 90 gal with 40 breeder sump. Plus a 20 gallon ato reservoir and a chiller. I am also including a few storage cabinets.

Thanks. I should have more progress next week. Going to be a slow build. I am making sure I put the support where they need to be to support the tank. And then I need to divide the stand into section. For the sump and ato/ chiller. Going to be a fun ride

Received my two American dj power switches today for my stand. Now I need to figure out where to place them.

It looks like you stacked the top and bottom frames on top of the vertical supports. If so, I'd definitely add some supports on an angle on all four sides. I'd be worried that if the tank got bumped there's no support to keep the stand from folding / collapsing.

I did stack them. However I'm not done with building it. On the legs I'm going to double up on the leg supports

Ya the vertical boards will be attached to the horizontal boards by another 2 x 6 right on top of the leg but longer for support. And then it will have a open back with the inside of the stand having plywood ( not sure what paint to use for inside protection. The skin will be nice sheets of plywood. Not sure on trim for the stand.

I'll continue to post updates as I make progress.

I have built a few things. Built about 5 different stand for aquariums a bed frame. I am self taught.

I'm open for suggestions if you have any.

I don't look at myself as a master carpenter. I don't know how to do some things. But I always look for a better way to do things. I allow my self room to learn cause I don't know it all

[The only thing I'm stuck on is whether to you glass for the baffles or acrylic.]

It is my experience that glass will bond better will silicon than acrylics. It is more difficult to cut glass so I would atlest make the last baffle glass so the water pressure will not push it toward your return pump.

I have two options for my sump that I can go with.

Option #1
I can buy a custom glass 40 gal sump for about $150 - 200.

Option #2
build my sump myself, and as far as glass or acrylic baffles go I would use glass cause it does bond better the acrylic to glass. The glass I would have cut by a glass shop since I don't want to take the chance on breaking the glass. I am leaning more towards option #2
