I would run 2 smaller heaters instead of one big one. Not as likely to nuke the tank if it were to stick on. I like the jager but I have had good luck with them . Never had a jbj

Do you really want the cheapest , or the most reliable?

+1! Take it from someone who made the mistake of buying cheap heaters early on...it's worth it to buy a good one (or two) the first time. I went with the cheapest heaters I could find, and they didn't work well to begin with, and they don't last. I paid for heaters 3 times over...would have been much better to have done it right the first time. Invest a little more for heaters that are reputable and quality materials. I recommend getting a titanium one with a digital controller.

I run a 800w heater on my 180. I know a lot of ppl swear to run multiple heaters for fear if one sticks on it will crash the tank. I started off with the jbj system and never had a problem with it. And with that system I ran a 1000w heater.

You are running a controller right? You can run just one big heater as long as your controller is monitoring it...

I use the titanium heater as well from BRS. Mine is controlled by my apex. Mine has a controller on it so I just set it a degree above were I want it and it works fine. I would do the same even if it doesn't have a built in controller. Turn the knob a little higher because they aren't as accurate as the apex is. Mine barely ever turns on but I live in Florida and on a cold night I use heat in my home. Yes it does get into the 30s sometimes but mostly in the 40s this time of year.
