I find most hobby grade skimmers overpriced and poorly made. I found a used LifeReef VS3-48 and I never looked back. Thinking of doing a DIY Bill Wann style skimmer for my next build.

Vertex Omega 150 - my first "real" purchase for my reef tank after years of 'throw-away' cheap skimmers. I love this thing. Quality pump, quality craftsmanship, things you don think about like how easy the whole thing comes apart for cleaning, and the swiveling nozzle for running line to a skimmate locker. High quality screws. I really wish they made a bigger one that would work on my newest build, but I dont want to be out $3000 on my skimmer either. Picked it up a few years ago during a Black Friday sale on BRS.

Im getting ready to fire up an Avast C3 Cone skimmer for my 350 gallon build. Building your own skimmer is a daunting task, but even if you are a perennial screw up like me, the Avast kit is easy to put together and you have a really nice skimmer for the price when you are all finished.
