Kent Marine Reef Carbon Killed Most My SPS!!!!

Last week I added 1/4 lb, or one cup of Kent Marine Reef Carbon to my reactor like I always do once a month and the next day I noticed all of my SPS corals had started to bleach out. I tested all my levels and everything was right where it should be. Well this continued over the last 8 days and only a few pieces that I pulled, dipped and cut the live from the necrosing tissue have made it. I go into my LFS today to explain what has been happening and they told me Kent has issued a recall today regarding the Reef Carbon stating due to the high levels of heavy metals in the carbon they are recalling everything....Thanks Kent. This would have been nice to know a week ago when all my shizz started dying

REEFERS BEWARE: IF YOU ARE RUNNING KENT MARINE REEF CARBON, PULL IT!!!! You can google the recall and check it out. Here's is there customer service number if anyone has the same issue. Of course their customer service

ouch, sorry to hear. Thanks for putting the warning out. I always use BRS's carbon but wonder how many company's use the same supplier? And how this could happen in general.

Kent posted on their recall that they use mined coal as the source of their carbon. Apparently a seam containing higher levels of heavy metals was mined. These metals aren't routinely tested for and therefor went undetected.

"Fish and higher invertebrates such as shrimp do not seem to be affected. After removal of the contaminated carbon and dilution by a water change or use of other filtration means, most corals have been able to recover in 2-3 weeks from the exposure."

2-3 weeks is WAAAAYYYY too long......

Where is the expiration date found? All I have is the container, not the top or seal and I can't find one. I just turned off my reactor currently filled with Kent, this is insane.

I have lost 20+ corals (most LPS actually) since December unable to figure out why, however I can't remember exactly when I started running the Kent. Is there any way to test to see if this is/was the issue?

Wow, that's horrible. I hope that they test for that stuff in the future. I remember when just teh head of a nail fell in my top off container, but it was nothing compared to what happened to you. I hope some locals will help you out.

The date on my 7lb container is just below where it says kent marine.

My sps was gone in 3 hours, I wish it could have made a come back.
