Hello, everyone! I'm so glad I found this forum. There seems to be a wealth of information here and I can't wait to browse through all of the sections. My husband and I have started a 36 gallon tank and have it set up and waiting for it to cycle. We decided to go with a live rock piece at the center. At first we tried oolite sand... after two weeks of fighting with the cloudy water.... THAT had to go! Since then we have switched to CaribSea Aragonite sand. We are very pleased with the results! It sucks that we had to start over, but it was the best thing to do. Our set up does not include a sump. We did take our time selecting a slimmer and decided to get the Reef Octopus Classic 90-HOB. I will try to post a picture for you guys!

reefwiser We live south of Madison County! We have quite a drive to get to the local salt water supply stores. We visit the one in Lexington. It seems that they take really good care of their tanks and get regular shipments of live rock and various fish.

Thank you all! I began noticing waste in the protein skimmer collection cup yesterday. Is this from the live rock?

Thanks! I would love to visit different suppliers and shops and see what's out there. I am not very familiar with Louisville, but thanks to good ol' Google maps anything is possible anymore. :)

We had a 55 gallon, but after moving we no longer had room for it. We started it as a salt water tank with Damsels and a clownfish. Sadly, the clownfish was very skittish. After a power outage one night, he managed to jump from the only hole in the hood. It was a small space between the skimmer tube and the plastic. :( We lost interest after that also. We did not do our research or take our time with the 55 gallon. We decided a 36 would be more manageable for our space. We are definitely taking our time and researching with this tank.

If wanted to remove some coral and don't want to kill it. How do I go about it? I have a Kenya tree coral that is in four place in my tank and I want to add more color. Any help would be great.

The protein skimmer is working because there is waste coming from the live rock. A skimmer works by the waste film coating the bubbles in the skimmer tube. The bubble rise and build up at the top and spill over into the collection cup.

If you get to Louisville sometime check out Aquatica Reef Supply/ saltwater store/ louisville kentucky and Blue Star Aquatics - Saltwater, Aquariums, Aquarium Supplies

The club will be having a frag swap in November with Coral Reef Farmers .
REEF FARMERS
I can personally vouch for Blue Star Aquatics. I have purchased my entire set up from there, Ryan really knows his business.
