I have an acan with 2 heads. ive had them for 1yr. no growth. And one of the heads detached itself from the skeleton and floated away. there is a red bubble on the side of the plug and tiny tiny little fast mite looking things that come out when I feed. whats happing? why did it detach itself and are those mite looking bugs bad?

hello there, the picture seems to be of a blasto. hopefully, I will be able to help once I have more information about your tank - size of the tank, how long it has been setup, what kind of lighting do you have water parameters....the red bubble seems like a red bubble algae. do you have any tangs in the tank? it should take care of it. more information will be required to help.

Sam.

Yep Blasto! The are slow growers can take a long time to sprout a head! Large clusters are worth buko some times!

to answer your question, absolutely one head can become a colony provided it has the right parameters...i will post picture tomorrow of the same blasto and you will see how the babies sprout around the blasto head....

now, here are a few things to look for:
1) do not trust peppermint shrimp with any LPS. it can very well be the reason...
2) check your nitrates and phosphates. anything higher than 0.08 phosphate on salifert can inhibit coral growth
3) can you post picture of the rest of the tank...do you run carbon and GFO?
