This week in the history of chemistry:

Oct 23 Mole day (at 6:02 AM or PM) (one mole = 6.02 x 1023 atoms)
Oct 24 Nylon stockings were first sold in 1939, in Wilmington, Delaware
Oct 24 Alonzo Dwight Phillips received US patent 68 for friction matches (the heads contained chalk, phosphorus, glue, and brimstone) in 1836.
Oct 26 Trust agreement creating the Petroleum Research Fund signed 1944.
Oct 27 Gustav Kirchhoff announces the invention of spectroscope in 1859
Oct 27 John Edward Lennard-Jones (of the famous Lennard-Jones potential of interatomic forces was born in 1894
Oct 29 Carl Djerassi, who invented oral contraceptives (US patent 2,744,122) was born in 1923
Oct 30 Gerhard Domagk was born in 1895. he discovered the antibiotic effect of the sulfanilamide drug prontosil and won the Nobel Prize (Medicine) in 1939.
Oct 31 Adolf von Baeyer was born 1835 he invented organic dyes (indigo and triphenylmethye dyes) and introduced concept of ring strain. Won the Nobel Prize in1905.

Good. There are three types of people, and you are obviously one of the types on the left:

isn't 6.02 x 1023 atoms avagodo's or avadupoy number?

fill in the blank with get the correct spelling from my limited phonic low memory of chem from 1965. LOL

And the same number the defines and amp. 1 ampere (shouldn't try spelling lol) is that number of electrons flowing by each second.

Just attempting to remember all that stuff from so long ago.

Yep.

A mole is Avagadro's number. :)

I believe the definition is that exactly 12.00000 grams of 12C (carbon 12) contains Avagadro's number of atoms.

Interesting.

I seemed to remember that a certain volume of an ideal gas container avagadro's number of molicules.

So I googled and found out that I should have known much more. Although I didn't find that I did uncover avagadro's law for the entire ideal gas stuff.

Seems like an old rocket scientist (aerospace engineer) should have already known that. :squigglemouth:

Basically I seem to remember that number popped up everywhere. Physics, electricity, chemistry and so on.
Avagadro must have really gotten around back in his day.

.

That is something you can impress your friends with: knowing how many actual molecules are in the air around them (well, I guess it depends on who your friends are  )

22.4 liters of gas contains about 6 x 1023 molecules, so a liter contains about 3 x 1022 molecules of gas!
