I found out if the skimmer is raised up above the water flow exiting the lower baffle the small pieces of algae don't clog the skimmer. The small pieces of algae flow under the skimmer into the main tank and the tang and reef cleaners get a treat.

Also the lipids and oils raise to the top of this section of the sump where the skimmer has better access to the stuff it's supposed to remove.
