Honestly I would say it has to do with where/who you bought them from. I don't think there are many if any of the original strain from jay painter out there anymore. If there are I don't think they look the same as they originally did which is probably caused by differing conditions of the tank they are in (lighting more than likely).

My two cents . Don't buy a zoa called a bowser, if it looks like CAR, with the hopes that it will color up. Find someone selling a really nice CAO and save yourself some cash.

Better yet. Find a CAR and throw it high in your tank and watch the yellow come out

IMO that second pic is not a CAO. But the bowsers look legit. I think this is the reason why I've stayed away from anything other than CAR's

I've never had CAO to compare but the CAR stay red in my tank I've never been able to make them develop the yellow on the inner ring. Bowsers always stay orange and car that look orange turn red in my tank.

My old CARs would have a larger rings of yellow in the disk. I've had different strains as well where the yellow wasn't that pronounced but you can see the yellow ring still. light intensity helps them color up too. Either when I had them under 8 T5s 55watt or LEDs.
