I've noticed that when some tanker's give their size of aquarium in gallons and the size in inches they don't equal. As an example a 48" X 18" X 24" divided by 231= 90 gallons outside measure. So to get a true reading using this formula, we need to inside measure and the hight would be the water hight. The actual gallons before we put in rocks and animals in. If you have a large sump(say 30 gallons) that gives you 240 lbs of rock volume + or - and brings your total gallons back to 90. If you don't have a sump, the formula helps you to know how many gallon's of water you have for proper dosing. If you have a large aquarium the formula is 4' X 2' X 1.5' X 7.5 = 90 gallons. You can measure any water vessel using these formula's. A round tank is circumference" X 2 X hight" divided by 231. I don't want to start a war as like when we by lumber we pay for a 2"x 4" and only get a 1 3/4" x 3 3/4.

Let me google that for you

1 US gallon = 231 cubic inches
1 Imperial gallon = 1.20095042 US gallons
1 US gallon = 3.78541178 liters
1 inches = 2.54 centimeters
1 cubic foot = 28.3168466 liters
1 cubic foot = 7.48051948 US gallons

These are the most common conversions a reefer needs to use.

By the way, a nominal 2x4 piece of lumber is 1.5" by 3.5". You should always calculate the true gallonage on your own if you think it will vary greatly from the final result. Remember that overflows, equipment, what level you set your overflow, etc... all takes away from the volume anyways, so who can you hold accountable if your tank doesn't really contain 10g? Only yourself. I remember a tank of the month over at nano reef dot com that was supposed to be 10g, but was so full of corals and rock that it ended up with 2-3 gallons in the end.

I just bought a petco 29 gallon and the outside of the glass measure's 30" x 18" x 12 1/2"(12.5), and when you divide that by 231 you get 29. Like I said I didn't want to start a war and numbers don't lie. I'm sorry to have upset you. I wasn't trying to split hairs. My bad on the 2x4, seems they keep getting smaller and smaller(unless we want to get into the differant grades of lumber). I'll show it in words. Length times Width times Hight in inches, divided by 231.

pssst: little ittey bitty secret: notice 1cubic foot= 7.48 gallons

round up to 7.5 gallons which is 3/4 of 10.

so just get dims in feet, take 3/4's, calculate volume, and add a 0 for a rough estimate.

for example

4'x2'x2' tank
take 3/4 or
3x2x2=12. add 0=120g tank.

LOL

If you have a 5 gallon bucket do you actually fill it to the top?!?!?!
It is a "SIZE OF DISPLAY" I don't state water volume. I state size of tank.
MY tank is 60"x24"x20" 124.67 gallons
BUT I fill it 1 inch from the top AND the 20 " is to the top of the acrylic brace and the bottom so ACTUAL measurements are 19"x23"x58.5" inside with 18"x23"x58.5 inch water volume (WITHOUT ROCK) 104.8

Semantics!!
