I would say your going to need 2 165w to give good coverage I have 3 of the same black box leds over my 6ft 125g and there is still some shading areas not sure about the 300w think it's 48 inches

Look at the galaxy hydro leds they have WiFi built in so it's programmable not just a dimmer

The 300W is 36" it is a full spectrum light and adjustable but not programmable. It comes down to $ and durability for the coral.

I wish I could find a good light that has all the options for under $200 like this one. This one is 185 on sale.

On RC there's a big thread about them. You can tie them into your controller if your using one to do sunrise and sunset. You might be able to get away with the 300w one and take off the lense. It's easy to remove. They have videos on YouTube.

Whether you decide on wifi programmable or not, the most important thing to look at in these LEDs, is the led lens. A lot of these fixtures come with 90 degree lens, but you want the 120 degree lens.

I know nothing about LED's why would you need to take the lenses off?

MARS AQUA or Chinese black box is a lower end LED product which will be sufficient for your basic reefing need. You will be able to grow any LPS and basic SPS with lesser light demand. I used the 165W model and it was good. I never lost colour or growth but my tank depth is 18 inch. Also yoiu can change their lenses according to your need.

You can get these 300w mars on ebay for 147 shipped just as an fyi. They will work just fine for a reef and just use two timers, one for the blue setting and one for the other bank, run the blue's for an hour or two before the other bank comes on for a sunrise/sunset approach.

I have the 165 Mars Aqua and I took the lenses off mine. The light was too focused, and I wanted more spread. If you have a deep tank, lenses are important, but for shallower tanks, there is no need. Oh, and I love this light....I think it's a great deal!

This would benefit a more shallow tank, I think. His is pretty deep and will need the better 120 lens for light penetration.

I think 120 degree will give more coverage not penetration. For penetration he will need a smaller angle lense like 60 degree so that the beam remain concentrated...:)

True but 60 degree lens won't give the spread he needs. Plus it's too directional and would create more shadowing. 90 degree would suffice, but i'm still not sure it would be enough spread. I've removed the lenses on mine and hated it.

I did it too....so either he will need two of them or one 300 watt. Also he can remove some lenses or changes 25% lenses with 120 or 60 degree depending upon his tank need.

He's stated he is looking at the 300w. I have the 165w mars aqua on my 20 gallon tall. It has the 90 degree lenses and it still isn't enough spread. I have dark areas on each left and right side. 60 deg lens would create more disco effect, as well.
