I might be in the minority but I have to disagree. The type of sand you use depends mainly on the type of setup you have. If you have a refusium you can generally skip the deep sand bed while if you have a plenum you have to go with the deep bed. Over the years every time I've tried fine sand I've had problems with it clogging up and creating an algae mess on the surface. Never been a problem with course sand. Bare bottoms skip many of the issues but I still prefer the look of a thin layer of course sand on the bottom and it gives a place for much of the smaller critters to shelter in. I have hundreds of spaghetti worms, brittle stars, pods,and zoos that settled on a place in the tank that they like.
