Spotlight My Electricity Savings going from MH to LED's

awsome! keep up the good work
Excellent analysis and detail. Thanks for this!
I thought these lights came out at the end of 2012 and became widely available in 2013. How could you have run them for 9 years?

But besides that the math makes sense.

Honestly I am surprised they actually lasted that long. A surprising amount of units hanging over salt water will have issues. Fans need replacing. Etc... that is always a surprise cost.

Hey thank you for the catch. I couldn't find my old receipt for these things anywhere and thought I purchased these in 2010. I did a search in my email and found a correspondence for support in 2012. So I have actually had them 7 years. These LED's are actually rock solid. I upgraded the pucks from 6100 to 6300 and purchased a 6300 to make the total of 5 I have now. I do maintenance them every now and then by blowing air in the fans to clean and wiping down. That is it.

When doing research on LED's back then, I made sure that to only go with a manufacturer that had upgrade capability. That is why I'm now looking at the Orpheks. They are upgrade able and use the same brand power supply the GHL's use. So I know they will last a while. I like the Orpheks deep blue which is why I"m almost ready to make an upgrade.

I will update the thread. Thanks again. I'm also adding the info from the Orphek power consumption.
First longtime analyze of the energy savings with LED I have seen. An excellent piece of work and I really appreciate that you included pictures from your aquarium with the different light settings. Well written and very well substantiated with facts from your aquarium and set up.

I also appreciate that you urge us to examine each case specifically and do not state that switching to LED always make a difference in energy costs

Sincerely Lasse

Thank you. Yes that is exactly what I was trying to get across. Each case has to be looked at individually.
Not everyone that runs halides need a chiller. I have run both on a large system, the power I saved on lights was spent heating the tank.

That is oh so true. If you read in the article...you will see that when I was running 250watt MH's I didnt run a chiller either. If I would have switched to LED"s then there was still savings. So for "My" setup. It was win.

I hope it inspires you to share your story. That way you can share how your power savings was spent in heating the tank. Its all good info that we need to share.
