Looking for an algae grazing fish...

    Fuge vs. Skimmer?

As for question #3, I had a similar thought- are they redundant in function? I was told that they are safe to be run in tangent, because both the skimmer and fuge are helpful in improving water quality and the skimmer has the added benefit of increasing the water pH while operating.

Questions on making the part list

I will have to dig more into powerheads. Seems like there is quite a few options and I guess I need to wrap my head around them more. Long way from the plain MJ900s. Anything I buy I want to make sure I can expand later on if I get a larger tank some day. I go back and forth on the RODI unit...

I understand protein skimmers are surface skimmers, so placing them in #2 or #4 would not be efficient correct? Also for #3, are there anything else I could put in there to benefit the...

    Fish identification

Take note in Post #3, first sentence!:oops::cool: I plead the fifth! You might be right...in looking at the pictures again, the head does have more of a blunt front-end. I'll leave it to the experts. :D

+1 on snail ID. Pic #1 of eggs, certainly Cerith. Pic 3, not 100% certain, but I'd bet my house, Nassarius.

Let’s Mix it Up! Designing and Using a Water Mixing Station

...question though, the pipe going in to the top of the saltwater container is in fact used for mixing. In that picture, if you open valves #1 and #3, it will circulate the water internally in the saltwater container. It pulls water from the bottom of the container and exits out the top...

Effects of live sand & mud on the microbial communities in my tanks (updated with new data)

[updated Feb 17, 2020 to include data from an additional tank] One of the most common questions I get is "If there's something I don't like about my aquarium's microbiome, what can I do about it?" In this thread I'll describe my experience with this question on my own home tanks. The punchline...

how much heat does a submerged return pump add?

...pumps. These were the very first truly silent pumps that I saw in the hobby. They were known for running very warm. A single P4 ( models #2, #3,#4) could add 4-5 degrees to a 100 gallon tank. They were a external only pump What I did to be able to use them was to get a small clip-on fan ( 6")...

Comparing filter rollers- **your reviews wanted!**

#3, which is the Ebay fleece cut 1/2" wider, was also a failure. When first installed it works just fine, but as it sits in water I think it weakens and stretches to become too narrow as it's pulled up the back side. Water just goes through the holes and the fleece never advances. I think the...

Are there three kinds of reefers?

#3, my tank was a perfect ecosystem until I got a dosing system, now it’s a war 2.5 years later, going back to low tech ways. Water chemistry was always perfect. Now it seems that there's always too many nutrients in tank that cause ugly algaes. Never had a problem until I started using 2 parts...

Is Reefing your #1 hobby? The most important hobby to you?

Three main hobbies chez Simon - reef tank, woodworking and hi-end audio (though, sadly, I no longer possess hi-end hearing). Woodworking is definitely #3, the other two toggle back and forth depending on my level of interest at any given time.
