I'm super excited to finally enter in my first Aquarium competition, it's a competition on Nano-Reef.com "365 Day Challenge", I always wanted to participate in this kind of event, this time the timing is good . I wanted to show my aquarium also on Reef2Reef so everyone can see it.
My name is Nicolas Marion, i'm from Montréal. I also have a YouTube channel youtube.com/c/aquasplendor where I create ... "things".

I'm really happy that my first competition is on the nano side, space is a big issue in my apartment so I don't have choice :p. Also reefing have a special place in my heart, so both together is close to a Big Bang event for me hehe

I'm pumped to create a display tank, I don't any, the one I have at home is more a laboratory testing gears/product for my channel then anything else.

I'm also planning to cover this aquarium on my channel, so everyone can see the evolution of a reef tank. In other to do that I will have to change my editing style, something more simple and relaxing that is fast/easy to edit. I will show the total budget also maybe? Will see.

I bought a tank for this competition 3 weeks ago and last week I receive the cabinet to put the tank on.
Today I just open the box to see inside, turn out, they sent me the wrong cabinet... yay, it's starting well

The tank size is 60x30x20cm (23.6x11.8x7.8 inches)
It's 36 Liters, 9.6 U.S. Gallon

I'm not 100% sure if it's that aquarium i'm going with, i'm concern about the height with coral growth that might be problematic with one of my aqua scape I have in mind.
I'm still looking for equipment most of has been bought, waiting to be deliver. For the wall separator I will look at it when i'm sure i'm going with this tank.
I'm not in hurry to start the aquarium right now. I love planning things before, making sure i'm taking the right decision, specialy with aquascape.

This aquarium will be set at my work place. I've been annoying my colleagues with aquarium for the last 2 years, but now, they will see why i love this so much.

It worry me a little bit to have different people (client/unknow/cleaner) to be around this. It's a little fragile baby for me and, i'm not going with a friendly budget either, hopefully people don't know how this hobby is expansive! Also the real reason why i'm doing this at work it's because I don't have any place for aquarium at home , and look so much better at work then at home. L.i.g.h.t.

Alright i continu very slowly but surely, so here is the hardware I bought for this project, I might change light or pumps, depending how it goes. But most of the hardware is here.

Now here the thing.

It's freaking hard to do this project right with the time I have and YouTube at the same time, holycow!

Doing this at work make all this process very slow: I have specific window when I can film, I don't always have all the tools to build the aquarium, gotta hide some stuff when I record/picture, my boss always worry about the mess, you can hear the people talking in my mic (try to film when nobody is around), Gotta good way to get water with the RODI without people notice too much, I rush thing has much has I can but, will get there, will get there!

I think I finish the All-In-One section, the small size give me trouble when i'm going to do maintenance, but I think it will do. Pipe are in the way..

Right now this is what the things look like (21 march 2020), I really want to have that tank ready and start the cycling process during that Covid-19 quarantine, we are not in quarantine yet but things might change next week. Also don't know if i'm still going to have work after this, we are in a critical situation.

I will do videos of this project when I can. It's getting there, slowly but surely!

Now that is
Interested in seeing what you come up with. What kind of corals are you planning?
Very good question.
I hesitate between 2 Option

#1 85% spa, birnest, stuff that grow quickly, different shape and color.
If I do that the aquascape will be extremely minimalist, the height could be a problem for this type of corals.

#2 Anything easy to maintain since the aquarium is at work it's harder to test/react, so probably a lot of softy

#3 Full Zoa garden in a Rice Asian mountain style aquascape

I don't know yet, I bought black sand, might use it or not.
When the aquarium will be all together and working I will give me some hints which option to go with.

BTW, if anyone have suggestion for a very small ATO that is really good let me know, didn't bought one yet.

Alright, alright, alright!
Has promise, first episode is done :)

I will try to keep this series really simple for editing.

The first episode is about the process I went into on what aquarium, where to put it, what stand to use?
I had more ideas here and there but I think that Ikea footage will, maybe, inspire you to get idea?

I had no clue what to do for the thumbnail so it's a little bit clickbait lol, enjoy this god creator theme (Hi Michelangelo )

Episode 3 is now published
I show the process of how I built the aquarium:

I did my best with the time I had (between dinner and stuff), I was making too much noise also at some point, had to find a spot lol

I know I'm a bit late and don't post pictures, I'm focusing on making content and making videos take a long time but I'm catching back.
The Covid-19 change so many things, it will be on the next episode I think, something... special because there so much stuff to talk about!

I was wondering something, right now my tank is cycling.
The Nitrate will eventually build up.

My question is: How to get rid off?
But here the catch:

No Skimmer,
No water change,
No macro Algae
No reactor (we are not allowed I think)

I was wondering if it was possible just with the bacteria to remove nitrate (into gas), I guess overtime but meh, any thought about this?

Don't ask me why No Water change etc... (I will probably just do this at some point like 80%) I was simply wondering how to make this happen when you have 0 coral in the tank.
I like to be challenge sometimes, and that puzzle me.

I was wondering, what you guys think about putting 2-3 drop of Red sea nopox during the cycle, then eventually, make a water change after couple weeks, it would help a little bit with nitrate building hope i guess?

Episode #4
It's not a clickbait, just sharing all my adventure, the Covid-19 hit me hard

Alright i'm going to summarize all the bad luck I had so far because i'm officially running for the " Bonus Awards from CM"
  • Bad Luck - Award for the competitor that just can't seem to catch a break.
- Broke the aquarium
- Went to my LFS to buy another one but he forget he's key to go down stairs
- Broke a part of acrylic sheet during DIY
- My black sand have a huge white mix (not sure if it was normal or not)
- Was about to buy a IKEA support for the the aquarium not too expensive, but my 2nd boss said meh so spent the double
- Covid-19 went on, when I was about to start the aquarium
- No access to my aquarium for multiple months
- My job contact me for work, but i'm not working in the same building where is my aquarium argnkdjfkd@##
- That furniture I bought for 500$, well now it's useless since I bring the aquarium at home
- Notice a Squirrel eat my bike Saddle just before going search my aquarium at work (like what the heck lol)
- Bought a RODI for nothing since my aquarium is at home
- Since I don't have place at home, I change the aquarium place 4 different time until I give up lol
- Wanted to change the aquarium for a bigger size but I couldn't contact Christopher the admin, so I decide to buy the same previous one to not bend the rules (on nano-reef.com)
- I wanted to create something black with the rock but my LFS sold the last piece of Black volcano just before I arrive

Yeah I will continue to fill up this list during the challenge I guess LOL

Massive news
Because you know, gotta run for that "Bad Luck" award

#1 The mix of Black Hawaiian bag that I use was apparently mislabeled, and it's their Indo Pacific Sand that they discontinued, I will contact them for replacement but...

#2 I received this morning my ICP for that mix of black sand that I use, Black Hawaiian and Eco-Complete

Nicolas Marion 443.jpg

That is alarming to me, please disregards Major elements since I use salinity at 20ppt.
I was expecting some of those elements to be higher but, man, I'm seriously considering to remove the sand and replace it with usually white one that I use.

- Silicon, yeah ok, good for algae and Sponge I think? but man that concentration!
- Nickel Errr say good bye to SPS?
- Manganese, yes please but that much arrggg, that will probably bleach coral at that concentration!
- Iron Yeah no ****, did see that one coming, it's high! but maybe fine at that concentration? (Hi Chaetomorpha)
- Barium I don't know about this one, it doesn't bother that much I guess?
- Aluminium higher then it should be, but is it dangerous at that level? maybe not?

So yeah, I don't know what to think about all this, if it was a Macro Algae tank it would fine I guess for corals, sps/lps, meh, might not like it.

What do you guys think?
