I’d start with a Cade, then some really expensive German skimmers and pumps, Coral Care lighting, full Neptune automation... then blow my budget by +$5,000.

Oh, I also forgot. Spend too much on the setup and not have enough left over for corals, fish and even substrate!

Here’s what I’d shoot for with ONLY $10k. Give or take on some categories if needed, and maybe some diy type stuff if needed…

$2000 on a custom tank
$500 on stand/canopy
$250 on sump
$2500 on lighting
$1000 on sump equipment
$1250 on tank equipment
$500 on plumbing
$750 tank controller
$1250 on rock/sand/livestock

I’m in the process of building my dream tank now and unfortunately will blow that budget.

I think a better question is what would I buy with a 10k budget? I would go with a Cade or Planet Aquarium Mega Matrix and call it a day with some gyres, live rock, and the best lighting and skimmer you had the budget left for

Ryan from BRS spent 10k on coral. With his discount that's 15k for us. 10k doesn't go as far as you think when talking dream tanks.

it certainly doesn’t. I found a used 270 rimless Miracles tank for $1,400, spent $500 to bring it home (trailer, gas, tolls), $500ish on plumbing, though I’ll have some leftovers, $300 on used halides, $200 for Reefbrites, and $60 or so for cerium oxide, a backing plate for my orbital polisher, and felt pads, $500 (?) for a Bashsea sump, a few hundred for heater mounts, an acclimation box, $600 for a big algae scrubber, plus all the gear I’ve slowly been acquiring for years knowing I wanted a tank this size. The sump was the only real extravagant purchase, but I wanted it to look nice and have proper mounts for dosing lines. I think it probably cost me over $10k over about 7 years for it all.
I bet $10k would get a great, all new 100 gallon system.

I'd take it to the casino and attempt to quadruple it on the craps table, then I would have enough to get started...

I always wanted to have a sunken tank in the floor of the house that you could wade into, say maybe three feet deep at most with sides that went up to maybe a foot. No idea what it would cost though.

Just what I am currently doing. Buy a building, put in my red sea reefer I just bought and my 12 foot planted tank and an acrylic 35x35x18 clown harem tank and a seating area. All together, including building, about $9400 including most of the livestock minus plants and lighting for the 12 foot (DIY under $100) and the stock for the cube.

The 625xxl is a wash because I am selling my 240 to pay for it and it's lighting and plumbing.

The $9400 also includes a new 10x20 building, drywall, insulation, electrical, paint, flooring, plumbing and a minisplit with dehumidifier.

10k wouldn’t get me far with my dream tank. Tank/stand/sump is about 9k all other equipment would probably be 10-15k.

But 10k I could do a really nice 100-150G tank. My next upgrade is a IM 100 ext and I’m planning about 6k to get it started minus livestock but the extra 4K could yield me some better equipment I wouldn’t usually get.

On a $10k budget custom would be hard, so I would go with a premade system.

(*) items would/ could be purchased after cycle is complete

Some of the hardware could be purchased second hand to reduce close to budget. I would add a UV if a used 25 or 57 watt Aqua UV popped up.

"Hardware" $10765
Waterbox Reef LX 190.4 $4500
Apex $800
COR-20 $350
*Trident $600
*GRO $130
ATK $200
*2x DOS $600
2x SKY with hanging kit $1800
NYOS 220 $800
Dual XF350 Gyre $550
Finnex 500W heater $75
150 GPD RODI $275
*Eheim feeder $25
*Simplicity dosing container $60

Aquascape $500
100 lbs Marco rock $300
80 lbs special grade sand $100
Bacteria $50
Glue/ Epoxy $50

Livestock $1,150
*Starter Fish $500 (Dr Reef quarantined... Clown Pair, a Tomini Tang, a wrasse, a blenny, a goby)
*Starter Coral $500 (A few zoas, frogspawn, Forest Fire Digi, WD, PC Rainbow, Rainbow monti, a few monti caps, firework cloves, ricordea shroom... try to buy specimens that have been in tanks for a while)
*Reef Cleaners CUC $125
*Chaeto $25

Consumable $250
TM Salt $125
*Triton Kit $50
*LRS Reef and Herbivore Frozen $50
