How are these auctions run? It keeps telling me, instantly, that I've been outbid...

They are just regular auctions....The current high bid of the item might say that it's $2.50 but what you don't know is how much the high bidder actually bid. If he has a maximum bid of $20 and you bid $3.00 on the item,you will instantly be outbid and the high bid on the item will change to $3.25 or something close to that. You won't be the high bidder until you pass whatever his maximum bid is. If you were to happen to bid $30 on that item,you would have the high bid at $20.25 even though you bid $30. Now everyone that bids between $20.26 and $30 will automatically be outbid by you because you have a maximum bid of $30.
