Looking into uv system, any recommendations?

I’m looking at Aqua ultra violet uv/ozone combo unit 160 watts rated for 1200 gallon system or should I get a larger 200 watt rated for 1500 gal aquarium. I don’t want to nuke the reef and I’m not sure if I will have the recommended 5000 gph going through it. Anyone has any experience with this unit uv/ozone combo?

Go with the larger 200watt unit. The ozone should be controllable and with an ORP probe and controller you should be able to safely keep the Ozone in control.

I have dual 160w UV Systems on my system - With slow flow through both of them. Then I have an Ozotech 1500 mg/hr Ozonizer pumping into the skimmer.

I've been running ozone for over 3 decades and won't run a tank without it. If you understand how it works it's a huge benefit to the system.

Look at the Pentair Smart HO UVs. I run the 150w. It is a beast and built commercial grade.

Also, what do you think of the Deltec E-flow 16? I'm looking at that same one for a return pump on a new 8ft tank build with a basement filtration room.

Thanks, I’ll look into the Pentair line.

I haven’t had a chance to use the EFlow16 but I do like the build quality and fit and finish.

I’m sure you will have zero issues with power or reliability.

I was thinking the same thing, bigger better, especially when reef matures.

What do you think of the 240 watt version/ 1800 gallon rated. Should I just go with the largest one they offer? difference in pricing is negligible between the 200wtt/1500gal and 240units.

UV has always helped in my 400 keeping fish healthier and preventing ich breakouts.

I want to incorporate ozone to make water crystal clear. One of my main gripes, my water always had a yellow/green look to it. Only time it would look better was few days after large water changes.

Because of size of system, I’m gonna do 15% water changes monthly. I’ve been reading a lot about little to no water changes lately, but I don’t know enough yet to implement that full time. I did get the 4 doser and dsr liquids to go that direction in future. But that’s another topic lol.

My bengal is also insane. I ended up making huge design choices in my last build that were specifically required because of the wildcat.
Wildcats for sure, he’s gotta water thing now. He dunks his toys in his water fountain and runs around house with them.

He figured out my kitchen sink turns on if he touches it. So now at random times throughout the day and especially in middle of night the water turns on and 15 min later I have a wet cat running around lol. He loves playing in water smh.

don’t let the cuteness fool you hahaha

If you have the space for the larger 240w UV go for it - Other than additional heat to the water - It's not going to do any harm and can only do good.

Ozone will definitely keep your water clear. I stopped doing water changes a long time ago. I do however evaporate a ton of water and some days will replace as much as 75 g of water in a day. I use evaporative cooling and have the majority of my system outside.

I didn't see if you were employing a refugium, but with using a refugium for nutrient export I didn't have any issues with skipping the water changes.

I have a new MRC Filter Roller on it's way and it should only help with water clarity and quality.

Thanks for the recommendation, I will definitely go with the larger 240 watt unit.

For nutrient/detritus export I went with large skimmer/filter roller/and gonna use the filter socks too (maybe) I’ve never used a filter roller before excited to get to use VF800 on this system.

Still on fence about refugium… How large is your refugium in your system? I feel like if I do set up a refugium it will be very small and won’t have a big enough impact on whole system.

very inspiring build! This is seriously insanely nice to read! Can not wait to see the rest of it, especially the aquascape!

Stand and canopy looks GREAT but access seems limited? You can only access from the overflow side?

Flow pump was also a concern for my project. Vortech is a wide area pump, but Abyzz and Panta Rhei are more of a linear flow. You have done tremendous research for your light, I have no doubt you will figured out about your flow pumps!

tagging along the ride for all your next steps!

Thank you, it’s definitely been fun piecing this thing together.

I haven’t started aquascape yet but i just ordered more Marco rock. I think I have the final aquascape ready and approved in my head lol.

The tile work for aquarium stand and canopy is gorgeous and it came out nicer than expected.

As far as access goes I’m not worried about it much. The tank is 5 feet wide and getting to corals for me would be impossible without getting in anyways. There is a lot of room for me to get in and prune trim coral. Aquascape will be minimal bonsai like so getting around will be a breeze.

Lights will be 10 to15 kessil A500x’s will be on track/rack for easy access to clean or replace.

Flow issues were all resolved when the canopy was done. I’m going closed loop above tank all you will see is lockline with VCA rfg’s on corners and mid tank. I bought those cheap jebao return pumps for my leak test, I will hide them in overflow. I will then replace them with the deltec Eflow return pump once they fail or I see the need to.

I just ordered the Aqua Ultra Violet ozone/uv 240 watt unit. Waiting on that unit to come in this week.
