Join me for interest journey of my previous tank build. A custom made peninsula 137g. At 58 “ long it fit nicely on a wall in our sunk in living room. In just weeks after these photos were taken, (Aug 2020) I began the process of selling the tank and stand. The selling of the corals would completely finance my brand new 180 g. But before I jump to my 180 that has now been up and running for about 7 months, I’d like to take you back on a pictorial journey of the 137g and how I achieved the success that I did with the equipment that I had, the finances that I had and the choices I made. Then the very new and beautiful 180g. with coral colonies that are just starting out.

Sounds awesome! I'd love to see it but the video is not working for me. Maybe it's my end (I'm using Firefox) or maybe its the upload, not sure.

So I was interested in getting a larger tank back in the summer of 2018. June to be exact. I happened ebe in Discount Aquarium and Reef in Tempe Az. And just inside the door was this peninsula style tank. It was a custom tank made for someone’s house. Of course I asked how much? $200. Good Reef!!! $200 ? I’ll take it. I was determined to build a better stand than my last diy project. The previous stand was for a 120g. It was sturdy but I wanted much more room underneath in the sump area. So off to Home Depot.

So the 40 gallon breeder (the previous last photo) was also a diy sump kit by Fijicube. I was very impressed with the quality of the craftsmanship. The kit ($125) came with 4 partitions that allowed me to customize my sump, creating chambers that were just right for my equipment. For instance. My return pump was 4”-5” across. So the return pump chamber was created to be just slightly bigger than that. In a lot of premade presized sumps those dimensions are made for you, wasting a lot of space. All I was asked to provide from Fijicube was a 40 gal breeder and silicone. And yes I kept the sump from this 137g and put it under my new 180 g.

And so I began to purchase sps corals for the new tank and carefully selected only my favorite softies that would accompany the new and improved sps dominated tank. My wife and I took a trip to California to attend a Reefapalooza 2 years ago to purchase some nice frags for the tank.

So this is how my 137 gal peninsula looked just before I upgraded to my “180”!!!
Obviously, I had some nice coral colonies. Coral colonies that were now worth some serious money. I figured, if I could sell some of these colonies, I could potentially fund a new 180 gal tank and stand.
so I did just that.

Adding new coral frags to replace the ones that I sold to fund the purchasing of my new tank and stand is a lot like starting over. But the corals and fish are doing beautifully. Also as you can see, I purchased a 30” Viparspectra led light. It fits like a glove above my 72” long tank.

great job on both tanks, I’ve have most certainly been a huge fan of peninsula style aquariums. It’s goal of mine to have a 200G+ peninsula style aquarium, either dividing a room, or in front of 1 large window Pane the size of the aquarium facing the backyard.
Thanks for the kind words. You’ve obviously got the know how to get to my “build thread” yet it’s not linked to my banner. Do you know if I can link it through Dropbox? Thanks for any help.

So yes and no. It doesn’t explain where you get the url in the first place so that I can add it to my badge. Fyi, I manually wrote out my url and it worked as far as showing a build thread badge but it won’t link to it??? The url also has a 6 digit number at the end of it. I obviously don’t need that number to receive a badge but I think I do need it to link it. Your turn :)
