@Esox I thought you might be interested.......
First, I replaced the 20 with a 40 long.

Second I modified an aqua-clear 110 to run macro algae. And a few bio rings.

The stand pipe is pulling water from a twenty panel under-gravel filter through the substrate.

The water, dry-rock, heater and Chinese box light are the only things left of my twenty.
Nitrates are high in the water, bacteria from the rocks and water should kick start this puppy.
If the system can drive the nitrates down I'll add more water.

The substrate may need vacuuming the filter should be good. The freshwater systems I've run in the past the ugf never needed maintenance. On the other hand this is new to me(saltwater version) so I don't really know.
