hello, I watched numerous videos from brs and searched here on this subject. The tank is a 150 gallon, 72" long x 18" wide x 29" tall. It will be an lps, softy tank. Will 3 spaced out xr15's work just fine? I have a 60 gallon cube 24x24x24 now and have one gen 4 xr15 and that seems to be more than enough. The only thing different is the 5 inches of depth. My current light is 9" above the water line. I'd rather buy 3 than 4 of course. Thanks

You really need the xr30s for that depth if you want any corals on the bottom 20%. The G5’s are far less powerful par wise then G4. They went for spread more then par with all the diffusion.

Or possibly do one xr30 in the center and 2 xr 15's on each side?

I would start with 3 XR15 Blue, XR15 is better than XR30 for spread. Two of them give the same output as one XR30 and same reach, but you can separate them whatever way you want. Also you can always add more when you up your game. Most people don't run the light at 100% anyway. So if you mount them at right height and run it at 100%, you might have enough light for a mixed reef already.

But honestly the better investment is to get a par meter. It's only $300ish for a basic one. That will give you clear idea of the light is enough or not, so no more guessing or buying more light than you need.

I have 3 over my 300xl. It all depends on what type of corals your wanting to keep.

Using a par meter is the best way to go, I agree. Yes, you can always add another xr15 if need be down the road. Now to my next light issue, do I want the blue one? Lol

I'd go with two Kessil AP9x (2 x $900), they have almost perfect spread for a 3 foot wide tank and probably plenty of PAR for LPS at 29 inches deep. Check out the BRS video.

I watched it, they tested the light on a 24" and 48" tank. It looked like a pretty nice light. Thank for the info, I'll do more research

I have a thread with PAR readings for an XR30 and XR15 Pro over a 3ft tank. My tank is not as deep as yours but my PAR readings are only at 40 and 60%. This might give you a good idea of how a mixture of XR30/15s will work for your tank.

I have a standard 6ft 125 gallon tank(same dimensions, just not as deep), and was told that 3 xr15's (gen 4) would work for what you want to have. I started with the 3, and chose to get a fourth. With the center brace in the way, I liked the look having 2 on either side evenly spaced without having the brace create a shadow in the tank. I'm trying my hand at a sps dominant, so I also added diffusers and an aquatic life T5 hybrid(61"). To me, there was nothing wrong just having the leds, but after much reading and much consideration I decided to add the T5's for what I wanted. I have my lights at about 8" above the water.

With that being said, I think I'll get 4 xr15's or three. The top of the tank has two cross braces so I won't be able to evenly space them. I'd rather do this right the first time

With the brace, I'll go with 3 XR15. And in the future if you find yourself needing more, add T5 or led bar as supplement.

I'm building a 180 gallon that also have two braces. I'm going with two XR30 on each side and one XR15 in the middle, for a SPS dominate setup. Also planning to supplement with Orphrek led bar later.
