Your talking about the sand I assume. Depends on how thick you want the sand bed. If you want DSB then I think the minimum would be 6” deep. My little tank has about 1.5” or so of crushed coral.
My two other tanks which are 12 gallons have 20 lbs in both and it looks nice but thick given the size of the cubes, volume is about 10 gallons of water. So, I wanted opinions for this 30 gallon which I just used one 20 lbs bag. So, you would say just a bit more? Say another 10 lbs only?

Why’d you give up on the cold water?
Great question. I built this tank for temperate use had it all insulated and ready to reef. I literally been running it almost 1 month burning electricity awaiting for CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND GAME to let me know what type of license I require to receive livestock from MATSU collection which has a permit to sell.

However, I wanted anemones which according to his website I need a SCP, scientific collectors permit to receive what he has. That license if approved is about $500 for one year.

As I waited and waited, CADFG has been struggling to give me an answer, this Wednesday they said I would have an answer. This is too much wait time for me and so many other reefers that own temperate systems, told me I will not get approved for such a receivers permit.

So, I decided I need a really nice LPS torch/frogspawn elegance coral system! I will however, make a smaller cold water system for my bedroom 7 gallon system which is small enough to order stuff I want from MATSU collection THAT DOESN'T REQUIRE A SCP!

So, do you think I should add another 20 lbs of live sand to give me 2 inches all over? Right now it's 1 inch all over.

Okay my live rock came in 30 lbs from KP Aquatics, his stuff is so awesome!

I plan on making a nice review since I took video of the whole process.

For now see this short 1 min video of how I aquascaped it.

With my new live rock that arrived from the ocean and into my system water to water no wet paper I started a lighting schedule to try to keep as much macro to stay.

I have my 15watt UV connected but not running, should I start running it now or wait until I get my first fish?

OMG! You have cursed me with that statement. Along with all that life, might I add I still have the orange sponges alive, I have brought in a lot of pest. Clicking sounds all the time but they never show who they are, mantis or pistol. Then I have vermitid snails, and bristle worms, a translucent flat worm and many tiny bristle stars with one being large that I allowed him to stay, since he was about the size of a small chocolate star fish. I have since siphoned out several flat worms and pulled off sandbed bristle worms, they are easy.

I am shoping around for a nice wrasse to fit this 30 gallon and to get along with my Swiss Guard Bassalet. Also purchased a Xterminator trap for the shrimps/pistol.

I know something is in there not wanted because I added two halloween hermit crabs, each $10 and lost one to something in the night, so I took the other one and placed him in my 12 gallon.

I want a sandsifting goby since I have none of my corals will be placed on the sandbed, I think it would be nice to have him/her sift and oxygen that top layer for me, I usually use a small rack made from wood chopsticks to keep my other two aquariums looking like brand new white sand every other day.

So, with the 30 gallon the rock is in the middle and you have say a racing track pure white sand 2-3 inches border that walks around the tank like a square, so he has that to rack for me, do you recommend any or will all sifting gobies run sand over the rock work towards corals placed on top of the rock work?

Here is a video ID I made to find out I had a pest I couldn't ID
