For 2025, I’m setting up a 14-gallon display refugium connected to my 50.3-gallon reef. Instead of just a chaeto mass hidden under the stand, this will be a visually engaging, biodiverse micro-ecosystem running on a reverse light cycle sitting on a stand next to the main display tank.

My goal is to establish a refugium that not only exports nutrients and breeds pods but is also something I can enjoy watching when the main tank is off - my tank is in my home office, and I spend more hours in there per day than the lights should be on in a single tank.

It will have sand over reef mud with its own mini-aquascape, and I’ll be experimenting with different macroalgaes, small inverts, and possibly even a mini anemone or soft coral, to see how well I can balance aesthetics with functionality. It’s a fine line between 'display' and 'nutrient export tool,' and I’m excited to see if I can pull it off!

Since most lights now are LED, and heat is the enemy of LEDs the feature I value most is proper heat management. It's the #1 contributor to lights lasting their advertised lifetime.
