Guys I am looking at buying two frag tanks one for SPS and one for softies and LPS. I just saw that ZooMed makes a 48"x24"x10" frag tank that sells for like $110....that is really cheap but.....Is that deep enough to get good circulation for SPS? I was initially leaning toward 12" deep, but at this price holy cow....I have to at least consider it.

This tank would be a frag tank and a frag growout tank (to grow small 4-5" colonies).

Since it's a frag tank I assume you sill not have any LR in it? I run a shallow reef that's 12" tall with a fair amount of LR and get more than enough flow with a gyre style CP-40 and return line on the opposite end.

I use the zoo meds. Work just fine.

I've found that 10" makes it difficult for powerheads not to suck air...sold my frag tank after that. If doing again I wouldn't do anything less than 12"

Yeah I won’t have live rock in the tank. I was thinking the egg crate would only be 2” above the bottom which is a bit closer to the bottom than I would like. But for the price this sounds like a go!

ps2cho makes a good point with the power heads sucking air. I had an Advanced Acrylic 24x24x8” frag tank that worked really well. 8” deep was a good depth. I ran an MP10 in there and didn’t have any air sucking issues. However at 48” long you’d need a bit more juice to provide good flow across that length. So the air sucking may become a problem.

If I were to do it again I’d go with 12”. The extra 4” just gives you a bit more options when considering larger LPS, softies and sps. Plus it allows for more tiered frag racks.

Use maxspect gyres. Zero issues with sucking air and they are the best flow for frag tanks over anything else. I run 3 xf230 per low boy on my sps tanks And the coral love it.
