That's a nice sump. Seems like a little extra acrylic in the design could have built in a cover for the roller mat - several others do. In leu of that, maybe try a little fan blowing on the dirty roll right when it exits the water - dry it out before it can get onto the spool and become a brick of nutrients and bacteria decay. But, I'm just spitballing here...
