PEMDAS - Parentheses, Exponents, Mulitiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction.

Both Multiplication/Division AND Addition/Subtraction can be interchangable based on what comes first from the left in the problem.

Therefore:

Parentheses (9+3) = 12

48/2(12) Division before multiplication because it is first from the left
48/2 = 24
24(12) = 288

Nice conondrum on the mathmatical rules...... Was just going over some Order of Operations with my son last night.

I agree with the MacBook - Going with you must multiply before you divide unless parenthese are in place (That is unless the left to right rule holds true). Which according to Excel it is 288. So what do the Math Scholars say?

48/2(9+3)
48/2(12)
48/24

Multiplication and Division are equal and should be calculated from Left to right. One does not trump the other
