As a draft these are the fish I am thing of going with for a 55g reef:
Coral beauty angel
2x anonymous clowns
Yellow watchman goby
6 or eight line wrass
Lawnmower blenny

Will it work?
If not, what is an alternative

Looks fine to me. Pistol shrimp for the watchman is a fun combo. If your structure isn't stable on the bottom don't get one though.

Back to the goby/shrimp pair and a solid foundation.

I just set up a new tank, and made little rubble pedastals for the rockwork to sit on. Then backfilled it all with sand. This gives the shrimp a place to dig, that won't cause a collapse when he pushes all the sand out.
