I'm adding a Clearwater algae scrubber to my sump tomorrow. I removed 20 mangroves from the sump along with 25 bio media blocks. I have come to the conclusion that mangroves do not grow quick enough to export nutrients for me. With the bio media in the sump it was basically a trap for nitrates and phosphates. I have cleaned the sump, it was definitely holding phosphates and nitrates in the refugium chamber. I’m installing the CW-50 algae scrubber in the morning. I’ll definitely have a cleaner sump since I will no longer have a grow light in my sump area. Now I’m just gonna grow the nuisance algae in my scrubber and throw it away every couple weeks. Here’s a photo of the sump cleaned ready for the install.

you might want to keep that bio media i have found with my algea scrubber that it will work to well at stripping all the nutrients out of the tank that bio media helps keep some N&P in the tank for your corals

I thought about that also, that’s why I bought the smallest algae Scrubber, and I feed very heavily. The bio media was some stuff I bought from Algae Barn and that crap sucked it kept disintegrating and falling apart. I think it was causing more harm than good. I think I had the wrong media though.

i have one of these and it has held up fantastic for over a year now but with these types of media you cant really have a dedicated pump in the sump area because the pump will cause the block to turn to sand more or less

Yes you’re correct that’s one if the reasons I removed the bio media. It was disintegrating turn into sand dust. Also made the mistake of putting two emerald crabs in the refuge to keep the algae at bay they basically pick the media blocks apart.

yeah if you get another bio media block put it in a part of the sump that has low flow and no crabs they truly keep so much bio diversity it is amazing I have been able to use dry rock and two aged bio bricks and start a tank day one with a tiny partial cycle cause those bricks have that much of a bio load to them.

Tanks looking good Patrick. Dont you want to come to Greensboro in February and help me move my tank again haha?
I remember you telling me about a year ago to take the media out the sump and the mangroves. Definitely wasn’t a valuable source of nutrient export.

I also used dry rock to start this tank. I’m 100% sure the bio media help me cycled my tank. And see the live rock much faster. Now everything is seeded and covered in coraline. I think about at the one year mark I should have remove the stuff because it was holding too many phosphates and nitrates
