I replaced the filter sock in my Waterbox 10 gallon with a filter media cup from Octo Aquatics.

I also have blue/white filter floss and from Marine Depot 200 um, 100 um, 50 um filter felt.

Problem with the filter media cup if I put a disc of the 200 um filter felt at the bottom, with some blue/white filter floss on top, the 200 um quickly clogs and restricts the flow.

The media cup only has holes at the bottom while a filter sock is one giant surface for water to pass through and detritus to accumulate.

This would be a similar problem with a media tray to replace the sock in the Waterbox 10 gallon.

Dawned on me I could use some reef safe superglue and build a sock to zip tie on to the bottom of the media cup.

The filter socks I have, have a heat welded seam along the edge and one at the bottom.

I just used some Bulk Reef Supply superglue to make the same seams on a sock design to fit my media cup. (2*pi*r.)

And a zip tie to hold the contraption to the bottom of the media cup.

I worry a little about the super glue in the tank ... but that is its intended purpose.

Now my media cup can have some blue/white floss and maybe the chemi-pure blue nano packet with the filter sock hanging off the bottom.

My original thought had been to use the filter felt to replace the felt on the filter sock in the same manner but I think the hybrid media-cup filter-sock approach will be better. Time will tell.

Maybe try to use a clothes iron to seal the seams next time.

Only place I have been able to find replacement filter socks for the Waterbox is from Waterbox (filter socks have a "Fire Aqua" imprint.)

I should include a picture or at least a sketch ...

Worth noting that the blue/white filter floss only filters out the "big stuff" compared to the 200 um filter felt.

And different brands of blue/white filter floss are noticeably different.

The Bulk Reef Supply Extra Thick Gel bothers me a lot.

I wear a N95 mask and goggles. Fumes get in my nose and eyes.

Especially when using mass quantities.

And as I am just a coral that can breathe air and walk ... I make a pretty good lab animal model for a coral.

"Octyl cyanoacrylate was developed to address toxicity concerns and to reduce skin irritation and allergic response. " "They have some minor toxicity.[1]"

Once it has cured with water doing the polymerization ... inert.

But just a 10 gallon tank ... kinda like the International Space Station ... for corals. An affront to the nose.

A glob of super glue in 100 gallon tank vs a 10 gallon.

How did your modified filter sock work out?

Working fine.

I also keep a piece of "filter floss" at the bottom of the media cup.

That needs changing more frequently.

(I do a detritus stir every day or so I generate a lot of stuff in the water column that gets caught by the filter floss pre-filter.)

It is the current method of record for this tank.

I am reusing the home made filter sock once after a rinse out and dry.

Bought more zip ties and superglue. Guess I'm committed.
