Help! There are so many of these things in my filter and I am completely and utterly freaked out about this. What are they, and will they get out?

Yep. Sponges. Actually a good thing and are micro-filtering your water.

I had no idea how to delete the threads. New to the website and thought they weren’t going through and getting rid of themselves.

google cyanobacteria. Although usually a result of inadequate flow, once it's there it can be difficult to get rid of. Increase circulation, siphon out as much as possible with water changes, and if all else fails, use chemiclean or another "red slime remover". As much as I try to avoid putting chemicals in my DT, chemiclean has now become a part of my tank fix-it kit.

+2 on chemiclean. I'm the same as @Billdogg and like to keep things natural but I caved. I just used it and it cleaned all traces of the cyano. We'll see how long it lasts.

I also had a ton of pineapple sponges for a few months. They are just starting to diminish. They feed off of silicates.
