I got the inspiration to try using my hanna PO4 checker (HI774) to test Nitrates from taricha's thread "Accurate NO3 Test with Hanna ULR P Checker"

But the directions use HI736 (PPB) and Red SeaNO3 test kit. I have the HI774 and use saliferts N03 kits so I wanted to give this a whirl using what I had on hand. I did some experimenting and modified the directions based on tarichas and to my surprise results have been very promising. Below is what I came up with (Note my No3 is usually between 1-5ppm so I've only been able to test in this range).

Directions:

1. perform salifert No3 test which produces a 1ml sample. (note: I always jot down the result this down to compare against hanna reading)
2. add 9ml of tank water to cuvette and place in HI774 and press C1.
3. once C2 appears remove cuvette and add the 1ml sample from step 1 using a pipette to the cuvette, mix as normal (dont shake) for 60 seconds.
4. place cuvette in checker and press button for C2.
5. multiply result by 10, this is your nitrate reading. Or so I hope.

While the factor of 10 maybe slightly off, ANYTHING is better than having to guess between 2-5ppm. Especially at zero cost (assuming you have the equipment) and minimal extra effort.

I would love to see others run a test and share their feedback, anyone seeing the same thing?

Note: if you dont have the HI774 just wait a week and buy yourself the Hanna N03 checker coming out next week!!!!

Interesting. I will definitely give it a try. I HATE trying to figure out the pink color on this test.

I hear you there, it's a serious shot in the dark to get consistent numbers from this kit. Let me know how it goes man.

Yeah I'm on that other thread - got too excited with the announcement today!
I was also looking forward to it. I like multiple different testers so I can double check sometimes but going to sit that one out

So here is my test. Looks like salifert is around 10. Which is usually where mine are. The ulr shows 116 after your instructions above. But I am supposed to multiply by 10? Or divide by 10? If it's divide then it's near, but your instructions said multiply?

Sounds right on the money then!!

The directions are for the HI774(ppm) and you have the HI736 (PPB). 116 ppb is 0.116 ppm.

Now that you have the same units as the Hi774 would read, you multiply by 10 giving 11.6ppm.

Actually I’m wrong.

Hmmm let me think about this one and I’ll get back to you...
