Great initiative to encourage more honest coral pictures. IMO it's dangerous for the hobby if we only ever post actinic only shots, it starts to border on dishonest representation of what corals look like in person under normal conditions. Plus it's nice to see colors you can't see under actinics and visa-versa. I'll have to take some comparison shots today if I can remember when I get home, granted it will only be on an iPhone using a home made viewing window [emoji23]
It's not in fact dishonest. Almost everyone buying these corals know that they are shot in these conditions. When I'm buying I rather have them shot in actinics rather then white. I don't know why people ask for white shots... I don't view my tank in daylight so why would I want to see the coral under daylight

I should clarify that I'm not calling actinic shots dishonest. What I was trying to say is when people are trying to sell corals and they only show pictures in actinics, that can be incredibly misleading. For example a lot of yellow corals are actually more green under daylight. Some people may be ok with this if they only ever view their tank in actinics, but I believe a majority of people have a more balanced spectrum with white lights and they would want to know what their corals would also look like during typical "daylight" conditions.

We all want to know what we're really getting when we buy something, and actinic only shots can be misleading for a corals true coloration, that's all. When it comes to viewing our tanks, to each their own! I love the actinic hour of my tank and seeing those crazy fluorescent colors. But when selling corals we should be cognizant that not everyone lives with 100% actinics 100% of the time. I just think it's fair to post daylight/actinic shots so we all see what a coral truly looks like.

There are people who do it to be dishonest. Of course, not everybody is dishonest, but it went on for years without really getting called out by people who knew the difference... so every seller and every poster of blue-only pics has to own a small bit of this now. We all are a bit to blame if you were around during this time period. With more people abandoning LED and seeing what other lights look like, this has subsided more today that a year or two ago.

I don't want to drag this thread off course LOL

I had a very similar sentiment until I realized just how many blue only reefers there are now. So the recognition to show both so that it appeals to everyone I think is a win-win.

I'd get more PAR onto that loripes. It will turn more pink/red and the polyps turn white. :)
Thanks Matt. Its stewing in the frag tank right now at only 250 par. I'll take your advice and move it to the display around 350-400 par and see if I get those awesome colors you mentioned.

Awesome post!... could you try and lay out some type of "white" and "blue" reference parameters. 14K, 20K, or some way of defining what you're using as white, and as blue? Possibly a comparison to Kelvin color temp for a more scientific approach?
Thanks for the great post, its a subject I've wondered about.

I don't have a fancy macro lens, but it's the best I can do with an iPhone.

Great thread for sure. I grow my corals under a 14-20K spectrum but do enjoy when things are ramping down for the night and some corals are under full blue. Even more fun with an orange filter under full blues. My tank looks like an old black light poster. If you're old enough to know the reference. :)

Call me crazy, but much like my own tank, yours all look better under white

I don’t run LEDs currently, but I have some in the garage I can throw over the tank in the morning this weekend before the lights come on. See what I’m working with.
