Hello everyone

I startedmy 90 gallon reef tank in December of this year and everything has been going super well but recently I have had a little bit of algae on the rocks and sand bed. I have been testing consistently and have not seen an ammonia or nitrate spike at all and had everything double checked at my lfs which confirmed my testing. I started my tank with a seeded bio block right when I set the tank up and have 5 fire fish and a wrasse at this point. My lfs recommended changjnjng out my RODI filters to rule out contamination from that as well as putting a bottle of dr Tim’s bacteria to see if the original cycle didn’t take. Does anyone else have any suggestions or any idea what could be causing this?

We know the cause of alage. Light + nutrients or excessive nutrients.
Your tank is cycled (you have living fish). I do not think adding bacteria will make much difference.
Could be new tank ugliness.

If theres no nems or coral in it, you can keep the lights off for a few days and make it go away fast

I only have a piece of coral not too big at all that I could try to move if you think the lights are what is causing it. I have 2 kessil 360we that I run on the schedule attached. Is that too much light?

You're going through the case of the uglies. It happens to newer tanks. Just be patient and most of the algae will start disappearing as other bacteria or CUC or fish do their jobs.

Ok I was not sure if it was the uglies or not. What makes that go away eventually and would turning my lights off help or hinder that process

I started my tank in December as well. I have to agree with lapin, probably the “ugly stage”. I am currently going through it as well. I’ve just been doing weekly water changes in the hopes it won’t last forever. Good luck.

I never bothered turning down the lights, but I did by half a dozen decent sized snails. I also had a sailfin tang and she kept picking at the algae. My tank is 5 months old and it as clear as can be now.
