In the classic car world. They tell you to take that number and times it by 3 to get the real number. This is true with reef tanks too.
Oh house remodeling too. Lol.

I'd guess 10-15k. Been in the hobby for over 15 years and 4 different setups though. It's hard to put a number on it to be honest.

I started my reef in 2000...............I've fogotten how much over the years......but I did spend $106.84 for 21 lbs of uncured Fiji.....I kept that receipt.

I have had several tanks over the years but never kept track of what I spent......until this last tank. I kept track of cost of every item, except for consumables and it was in excess of $8000. I got less than 1/2 when I recently sold everything which is about par for the course in this hobby.
