I'm in the process of putting together a nano reef tank and have set myself a budget of $500 for equipment and $200 for livestock. Currently my tank is cycling and I've only spent about $330. Having a FOWLR tank in the past and knowing that this hobby can get VERY expensive VERY quickly I think setting a budget for myself makes it more rewarding in the long run.

As much as I'd love to have a 250g tank and fancy things like an Ekoral, I don't currently have the space or finances for a project that big. Everything I do to my nano tank now I see as an investment for a larger set up future with both the knowledge gained and equipment purchased.

Man, I honestly have no idea. My tank and stand was about $1700 eight years ago when I bought it but I would hate to add up all the other stuff (lights, pumps, rock, coral, fish, skimmers, etc.)

My accounting software has the option to set up novel spending categories and I have one for "tank" and one for "hunting" (for some reason I didn't set one up for my other hobby..scuba diving). In the last 12 months "tank" was number 5 on the list behind charitable giving, bills/utilities, auto/transportation and home maintenance and accounted for a little over 6% of my spending.

Thanks for nothing! I was blissfully ignorant before this thread!:p:);Joyful

I don’t need to estimate. I know exactly that I have spent $13,244 since 2012. I track everything
