I was getting an aluminum stand built for my aqueon 210 gallon tank. I went to a welder with plans of a steel stand but he talked me into an aluminum one. After hours of internet research and trying a bunch of those engineering calulators I am still not confident that the stand will hold the weight. The welder says it won' t be a problem but I like more than one person's opinion. The stand is being made of 2 x 2 x 1/4 aluminum square tube. The front needs to be open for easy access for sump removal due to its a custom 60 in sump.

I'd say there are a lot of factors involved such as bracing and how the tubes are run. I'd think I'd want an engineered designed stand but the aluminum wouldn't bother me at all.

Maybe have a search around for a look at the red sea max 650 tanks(160gal) - they are like 3/4 x 3/4 x ?? aluminium box section tube for the stand & hold up fine

Look at 80/20 it’s extruded aluminum a lot stronger
It’s pretty much the same thing used on Red Sea tank stands
I believe there website has specifications on weights and tensil strength

    https://www.8020.net/freesample

And they will cut to size and sell the hardware to assemble

Unfortunately I already ordered the stand but then second guessed it. These are the prints I provided to the welder with an addition if the center post in the middle

Can you send me the dimensions for wall thickness of the square pipe and outer diameter of the pipe I’ll run it by engineering at work tomorrow and they give me a good estimate on structural strength of this set up

This more complicated than I thought here goes
Well engineering said yes and no
Yes the material will hold the weight
They also mentioned the welds what kind of inspection are they going thru for penetration
Also they said that they don’t know if the flex of the glass is going to be enough to flex with the aluminum other variables
I think I just made your choice harder
    Sorry

No worries , I would say 80 to 90 percent of stands are overbuilt and are not the weak link in any build. That is, if they are level and true. I haven’t heard of too many stand failures as a matter of fact.
