Am I the only person that thinks mangrove tanks are hideous and trashy looking?

Sometimes I see people focus more on growing mangroves than their actual corals...every time I see a mangrove tank it's always some sump on the floor or off the the side that completely takes away from the reef tank and often gets more focus than the actual tank (which usually has like one coral in it).

The only time I have seen ones that really caught my eye is when they are in a fresh water or amazon style themed tank (one that usually takes up the entire wall with extremely large growth.

Am I being too critical here? They just look so ugly to me... sorry if that comes off too negative. :)

I guess it is all about what looks appealing to you. I personally have only seen a few that I have liked, and they were all designed around the rockscape coming out of the water on an island with just one or two mangroves growing there.

It's all about the design. I remember seeing an actual photo of a wild SPS reef growing right along some mangroves, it was impressive.

They grow really slow and would probably need some good bonsai techniques to keep them from shading the reef tank.

Certainly a matter of opinion, especially since I plan to include a mangrove tank off to the side of my reef tank since I like the look of mangroves!
Also, this will allow for nutrient export as well as provide a tank for not-reef-safe fishes.

Kinda brings up another question here, what are the water conditions around mangroves like. I imagine that the roots trap detritus and organic matter so that the nitrates/nitrites should be decently high?

I think people from Indiana are weird.
Not as weird as people from Wisconsin! Sorry didn’t mean to bully and trigger all the sad mangrove folks... I think I developed my distaste for them when I bought my first tank from some dude that had a 40g reef with about 1000 gallons worth of mangrove tanks all around his living room. Scarred me for life!

I think all your mangroves are really petty and nice!

I like them. Some pretty cool tanks out there.
Also, I don’t think they have nitrate issues like some other tanks.

Being from Indiana you dont know actually know what a mangrove forest looks like maybe just on TV but I live near the Indian River Lagoon which has a mangrove estuary it's a vital part of an in Shore habitat that affects offshore directly so people from Indiana are weird LOL

Yes, people from Indiana never travel! :) Never, ever, ever! Mangrove forests are amazing, so are the large captive displays you find in museums and zoos but I just think seeing them sticking out of the sump of some cheapo AIO reef aquarium looks out of place and tacky.

About 15 years ago I was a consultant working a major acquisition; had a temporary office in Colombia where I would spend 30 days on, 30 days off. Got a chance to see some amazing mangrove forests. Used to also do some large scale motorcycle tours in South Africa (eastern coast) and saw some amazing (and dangerous) mangrove forests...south africa is what got me into reefing.

*EDIT: Florida people don't get to call anyone weird. :)

Florida man knows no boundries.

Yeah, I see what you're saying, though I wouldn't consider those to be mangrove tanks, just tanks with a couple mangroves in them. Displays centered around mangroves can be really amazing, have you seen WWC's build thread?

Yes I have, they have an amazing new store. My sister lives about 5 mins from them so it's nice to visit in person as I travel to Florida quite often. I assume you're talking about the corner lagoon? It's very well done but again, not my style.
