Would you guys think an A500x would be the right light for the job to light a Marineland DD 36x36x27 anemone tank? Website says it can reach a 36x36 area. Looking to see what you guys have to say about this choice from your experiences with the light.

I think the 500x is geared towards deeper tanks, but it can also work in shallow tanks given the right mounting height. Yeah, I never understood the "kessil can't grow sps" gripe. Completely baseless if you ask me. I think it mostly comes from reefers who don't understand how to implement lighting (led's) in a reef tank.

What’s the depth of your tank?

I plan on these lights on a tank with a depth of 16.5” what’s your depth?

I'm using the 500x in a unique way over a 10g tank mounted much higher. For a tank that's 16" deep, I would do several 360x's as they will give you the coverage you need. If your tank was 24" then the 500x would be appropriate. I'll try to post some pics of my old setup on my 90g and my new nano system. I would also use Quanta Pro bars over the new Blade any day of the week. The AI lights don't do it for me, especially at that price.

Here’s a quick pic of my nano setup, don’t mind the mess, still setting things up. The 25g will be mainly LPS and the 10g will house a couple crocea clams, a mangrove and some sea grass.

Here’s how I used the 360x’s on my custom 90g. Depending on your scape and what corals you’re keeping will depend on how many 360x’s you’ll need? For sps/acropora, my rule is one fixture for every 12”-16” square of tank space. Again, this is for acropora, if you’re leaning towards more tabling/encrusting species, then you can cover more area with one fixture. Don’t mind the dirty glass in this pic, this just shows how I used the lights. I’m a huge fan of using hybrid setups with LEDs, meaning I like mixing styles/types to achieve what I want. I hate flat looking tanks, so I could never use T5’s on their own, as I love contrast and creating a sense of depth. Kessil’s are perfect for creating contrast, while blending the spectrum in a very natural way. Obviously my tanks are examples of extremes in regards to lighting, but it gives you an idea on how to implement them for your use. If I were lighting a larger tank (4’ or longer) I would use Kessil’s with Quanta Pro bars.
But I think my nano setup is a perfect example of how unique Kessil’s can be and how versatile they can be when properly implemented.

Hey guys, have a few questions I'd love to get input on. I just set up my 290.6 waterbox, dimensions are 6 ft x 30" x 25". Really love the Kessil shimmer and don't mind some shadowing as I feel it gives it a more natural look. I'm not a huge SPS guy (I do know these are what they were designed for), I'm more into LPS/other softies. Was still hoping to run 3 x 500x's because of the clean look they have mounted while also knowing I have the power to one day get more into SPS's. Anyone on here running ONLY the 500's without any supplementation? I've heard these kessils can only dim down to 12%, is that correct? I love the power potential of these things, but at the same time I still love an "only blue" hour or so in the morning and night. Thanks!

My 6x2x2' Reef has been lit with exclusively 500's for about a year and 6 months. My goal for this tank was an aesthetically pleasing display in a busy part of the house. I've been down the road of having tanks that look like science projects many times, and still do that with a smaller system in the basement. But I wanted this system to be simple and clean. I like the Kessil's a lot. The appearance of the fixtures, the spectrum, and the wonderful shimmer make for a fantastic display. I did have to adjust the aquascape to have less overhangs due to shadows, but I'd rather do that than have a tanning bed over the tank. I grow sps just fine, and have a few in the tank. But the tank is really geared to being a mixed reef.

I think you’ll be fine with only three. I’ve not heard about the 12% dimming, maybe that’s control through an apex issue? I use the WiFi dongle and it works just fine. Having contrast and shaded areas looks natural to me and gives you an opportunity to put certain animals in those areas.
@Mark tank looks great! One tip with the auto feeder, move it to your return section of the sump and add a small powerhead to the return section, this way it keeps the food in suspension until the return draws it into the display.

Thanks @minus9! I've thought about doing that with the auto-feeder, I need to give that a try. It's kind of an eye sore on the tank.

Beautiful tank man! That's EXACTLY the look I want, appreciate the input with pictures. I'll post some pictures when the lights arrive!

Source?

I do not have the a500 but I do have a couple of a360x and have never run into that problem. I have used the wired spectra controller they sell, the wireless dongle, and the wireless dongle with Neptune Apex integration (HUGE quality of life improvement). They all ramp up, and down, without issue and to 0%.

I too plan on running them with a Neptune apex. Have hears nothing but amazing reviews. Heard the Kessil app is awful.

I believe I read the 12% dimming thing somewhere on these forums. Could've been a different site. I'll try to find it.

I think you will like the Neptune Apex integration. I'm glad both companies worked it out and support it. I never did like the phone app but attributed it to my age :)

No need. I was curious is all. I've not heard that but I also do not have that specific light kit. It seemed odd to me is all. You could always send Kessil an email via the portal and see what they say. I've had pretty good luck emailing them and usually receive a reply in a couple of days. It is an expensive light kit and if you need 0% I would find out from the source (Kessil).

Yeah, especially for rimless tanks, it's nice to clear out that space. I just use a small Sicce voyager nano and put it on the opposite end of the return section. I typically use NLS pellets and TDO (small), so they've never caused a problem with the pump. I'm also a low turnover return pump guy, so my return is only running at 35%.

Hey Mark, quick question, how's the glare with the lights mounted so high?
I was planning on running them with the reflector it comes with to limit the glare without a lense on it. Thanks!

Also, this might be a dumb question, but I purchased the Neptune apex...I've heard you could control these lights through it? Do I still need to buy either the kessil controller or wifi dongle?
