I'm not new to reefing, but this sounds like a noob question to me.

I'm starting up a new frag tank and waiting for deliver, need to do plumbing, etc. Any reason I can't go ahead and buy some live rock from LFS and get a cycle going in a brute trash can? heater, powerhead, etc in the brute.

My display has been taken down while we are in a rental building a new house. This frag tanks is just something to keep me occupied until our house is done.
