Hello, I am hoping to set up an AIO reef casa aquarium and I was hoping to keep a BTA, I recently learned that a big problem with them is on the AIO aquariums they can block the overflow grill and stop the flow, and if the ATO is in the back chamber the that part looses water. Then the ATO thinks there is no water in the tank and it floods. Is there any sort of guard for the ATO or diy solutions? Thank you!

If a bubble tip is wandering up to an overflow I would think it means the conditions are not good and it is searching for a place with flow and light to its liking. I suppose water parameters could also cause it to wander. I kept bubble tips for years and had as many as 50 in one tank but I never had one leave the rocks. I've had plenty move when they got crowded but they never left the rocks. Even when I added new ones they stayed on the rocks. I never added any to a young tank so maybe having them in a mature system helps or maybe I'm just lucky. I've read of plenty getting in powerheads but I can't help but wonder if it's because tank parameters were not suited for keeping them but thats just me thinking.

One thing you can do is try to find an AIO with dual overflows. I keep many bubble tips in a IM 20 with dual overflows and I did encounter the problem you are speaking of. Luckily for me, only one overflow got blocked and I caught it the next morning. It raised the water level a lot and the ATO actually hit it's max fill timer and stopped on its own.

Because the other overflow wasn't blocked, there was just enough water going into the back chambers to prevent the return pump from drying out

Thank you! I am planning on getting a smaller one with just 1 overflow, so maybe I won’t keep anemones idk. But we will see, anyways thank you!

Mine crowd the overflow, but never have restricted it. Been there years.

If it does, I’d just carefully remove him.

I think he likes the flow coming at him.

Maybe look into an ATO failsafe. Water level gets high enough in the display the ato shuts off.

Not a direct answer but something I noticed and am fascinated by.

I have kept BTA and carpets for multiple years. Then I got a nexus burst anemone.

They all exclusively had issues with the carpet. I bought 10 and there were like zombies. Would go over and sit by the hadonni and sting each other.

Now I have had several other BTA touch the hadonni with no ill effect for periods. They generally weren’t near each other other as carpet is in sand.

Long story endless I noticed the nexus is a different subspecies of anemone. There are many noticeable differences.

One huge one is how argue they grow.

I once got a Chicago and it grew to the size of a saucer plate, was crazy intimidating. Then it split into 3.

The nexUS burst split more, but are easily 1/3 the size.

If you get these or another morph of the smaller variety the foot would not be large enough to cover an overflow.

Thanks for reading my dissertation

Not sure how noticeable the size dif is. The darth vaders can grow a bit more, but I’m expecting the nexus to split any time now.

Also notice the slight variation of the tentacle. I believe if you want to hunt down another small variety it may be a good indicator. Reminds me of a rigid catholic hat or chess piece. Darth Vader tentacles are more…. Fat!?
