Looking for videos on how to plumb this beast or advise on how you did it. Also what is your flow rate for algae. Searching the web and all I find is how to install the bulbs.

If you look through the article you will find dwell times based on types of bulbs and wattage sizes etc.

I have a idea of what flow I want. The challenging part is plumbing this thing. It has 2” elbows. And I don’t know if I can reduce it to as much as 3/4

My bad, you were asking about flow rate for algae is why I sent info about dwell times.
Reducing the elbows will have no effect on the unit as long as you stick to the proper flow rates for the size and style of bulb. Too slow will heat the bulb up reducing its life and too fast will make it ineffective.

Marine Depot sells them - did you look at the instructions PDF? I generally assume 10 gph per watt for sterilization, so nominally 400 gph for this unit. Depending on the pump, you can definitely push that much through 3/4" pipe and fittings.

I did. It says maximum flow rate gph is I believe 1200 gph for algae. Seems like a quick flow to me

I agree. 'Algae' usually means clarification rather than sterilization. Start with 400 gph and see how it works out. The notion of slow flow and overheating bulb/quartz sleeve is something of a red herring as flow would have to be REALLY slow for that to be a problem.

By flow I assume you mean the piping configuration. I don't feel like doing a youtube video right now but here are pics of the piping in and out of the UV. It's fed directly from my Aqua Medic DC Runner return pump with 1" PVC pipe through a 1" X 2" reducer. Then out of the UV through another 1" X 2" reducer back to 1" PVC pipe. Then it goes through a 1" Neptune flow sensor and Sea Swirl to the display tank. !00% of my return water goes through the UV.

So I have a 2” drain pipe. Would that be to much flow to drain it directly into the UV then into filter sock? Running 2 1” drains that Y into a 2” drain using vectra 1 at 3/4 flow

I’d second guess installing it on the drain. If there’s air mixed in with the water you could burn up the unit. Also it will be less efficient as the water is dirtiest on the drain side. You really want it installed after your sump/filters. And you should have the output above the input so it doesn’t get air bound.

Horizontal is fine as long as the water exits higher than it enters. You don’t want any air pockets. They’re pretty big units so make sure you have the room if your planning on putting it under the tank.

Yes I have the room. It I’ll be lower then the pipe shown then recirculate back up to the level of the pipe is now. So about a foot lower depending on how low long the unions and shut of valve will be.

Thanks for your help reef hog. Got it almost complete. Going to cut the main pipe tomorrow and install it. Not doing it tonight in case I have any issues I can get the the hardware store lol.
