Leathers are soft/slimy to the touch. If it's hard, stony, then it looks dead to me.

Is it hard, soft, did it have polyps at the store? It looks pretty rough to me no matter what it is
It is hard but bendable definitely like a leather, not slimey, no polyps at store. I really wanna do everything we can to nurse it if it is bad, which sucks because I really like that store. The other two frags we got are thriving so any recommendations would help!

If it’s bendable, I would guess it’s a cabbage leather. If it’s hard, it looks like the skeleton of a Turbinaria reniformis (the smaller polyped type, not the recently reclassified Duncanopsammia (previously Turbinaria) peltata).

If it’s a leather- to “nurse it back To health” you will need to consider a few things:

Leathers can usually stand most light- but if it was in low par and you place it in high or it will take time to acclimate. I like to keep them in medium light

water quality- all parameters should be within acceptable ranges and stable. I find leathers like a little no3/po4- especially in newer tanks.

it will most likely take a few days or so to get use to the new tank. If you can take it out and smell it- if it smells bad then it’s dying or dead. If it doesn’t smell then I would just leave it alone and let it acclimate to tour tank. In your last photo it looks shiny - this is usually what they look like when they are “shedding”- this is a good thing and means it’s acclimating to your tank. They do do this periodically and usually look great once they open back up.

here’s a photo of mine- it’s about 6-7 years old- almost 2ft front to back when open during the day:

Agree on the toadstool guess and the fact that they will retract while in pristine conditions - like this well established one below, it is not surprising that they will retract for extended periods while stressed. Would reduce light but not flow, keep nutrients above baseline and hope for the best.

below that one from the lagoon tank feeling its oats

It is a green cabbage leather. Should grow nicely left on the sand or low in tank.

Could be toadstool Wait till grows a bit. Give it moderate flow and lower light for now.
