Although I do still run the apex display, I also have a screen mounted above the tank to access apex fusion. Initially I used a cheap fire tablet, but after two of those failed I went to an iPad mini and then to a full sized iPad. I have it mounted with the smart cover so I can put it to sleep during the night. None of these tablets are designed to be on 24/7/365. I replicated the alarms from the apex display with a series of colored lights and buzzers.
I'm with you (I have a 34 gal. RSM 130D)someday I hope to setup an Apex when I find a good deal or used one. I can't justify the cost on my setup
Funny You mentioned 24/7/365 - my Ipad HAS been on 24/7/365 for 4+ years - on that note I bought a pair of Ipad Minis off Ebay for $300 for the pair, so I do have a spare.
Does an old notebook with a pencil count? I can always glue some fancy pictures to make it look nice
