I believe I read that the height of the landscaping coral materials should not exceed 1/2 of the tanks height. Is this correct? I plan to have LPS with a few SPS down the road.

Its personal preference, going only half way allows for more sps height for stags and such. If your wanting to do more of a mix reef, having a higher structure allows for sps to be in the high light and still have enough depth to not blast lower light corals below.
