Are there fish that can't jump out of an aquarium? Or just keep the tank fed?

Hello my LFS is delivering my aquarium next week, it's an Innovative Marine 100 gallon ext. My LFS is also bringing the water at the same time. I'm planning on using Dr Tims and ammonia for aquariums to cycle it. Also after it's delivered i plan on ordering a lid from Kraken lids. My thought is, if the aquarium is cycled before the lid arrives is there a good way to keep the cycle going? Are there any fish that are basically incapable of jumping out or should I just put food in the tank each day? I know that IM aquariums come with a lid but I don't think it will fit with the lights attached to the glass. Thanks for any suggestions!

How many azure damsels would you recommend? Do they do well as a small group?

Any fish can jump (says the guy with 3 open top tanks lol) No need to add fish to cycle. Cycle the tank with the ammonia you have then just add fish you are sure you want later. Fish are only added for a source of ammonia when cycling so no need to add them at the start since your using ammonia.

Thanks for your reply. Basically after the aquarium is cycled i can just keep adding ammonia indefinitely to keep it cycled?

I had this same question recently. From what I read on here you can let the tank sit fallow for a reasonable period of time. You don't keep "feeding" the bacteria ammonia they go dormant or less active and then will be there when you add the fish. So once ammonia is zero and nitrites are zero you have completed the cycle. You don't have to immediately add fish if its a few weeks to fish or whatever its no biggie, your tank is cycled.

If you’ve got maricultured live rock it’ll provide the bacteria you need for nitrification , so just go ahead and add the clowns at least. Depending how many other fish you want, I’d go with 3-4 damsels. I’d suggest chromis as they’re more peaceful than other damsels. Other fish I’d recommend down the road would be wrasses, leopards being a fav of mine.

I supposed that may work but what I meant was use the ammonia vs adding fish to cycle the tank. Once you have nitrates I would add a fish or two to keep things rolling.

Any fish could jump it’s how likely they are to/if the species are known jumpers like eels and wrasses. For instance there have been times that Hewbie my porcupine pufferfish along with a marine betta, angel, and tang have lived months at a time in an uncovered tank or bin. But Hewbie is far too smart to jump out and knows his limits. Jumping out for him is not something he would do and is a death sentence for a puffer therefore he stays wet in the tank lol.

For my aquascape I'm just using dry rock so that won't be much help with the bacteria. The Chromis are a good option! I want to save room for a Coral Beauty Angelfish and a Tomini or White Tail Bristletooth Tang (if I can find one lol) I'll check out the leopard wrasses!

I will say I’ve never seen my clown fish jump before!
I had a Darwin Clown jump out of my 55 gallon. It was a real shame too. She used to be an evil devil fish in her 20 gallon. I moved her to the bigger tank, and she was just starting to turn her life around.
