this is a yes... but
there are types (green fuzzy as one example) that are can and do destroy many SPS/LPS they contact. This and the above should include a warning similar to several others, i.e., keep them on a remote rock - even fabricated frag rock, also you can keep them where you want them
do they do provide a beginner with the confidence that they can grow/propagate something interesting and attractive in the early months...

it is the first coral that I have sold back to the LFS , another confidence builder

I have not killed any mushrooms that me or my boss have purchased yet. In fact the flame thrower yuma I bought him last year has made 5 new ones since.

However both of our tanks are a work in progress and anything could change.

I have one attached to the stem of a leather coral. Should I coax it off?

For sure! There are certainly more advanced mushroom corals but also super easy ones as well. I know i started with them and now im propagating Jawbreakers and kryptonites. Absolutely love the jawbreaker colors.

Yes some shrooms can be as easy or as especially advanced as any other critter we put in out tanks. Some will easily multiply like rabbits and take over a tank and become impossible to control but some will also never propagate naturally, melt and die with slightest lighting, flow or parameter off.
Just have to do due diligence, research and figure out what you want and need and stock tank appropriately. These days im finding this is the case with anything I introduce to the tank and where I should have started from the beginning lol.

I say yes they are good for beginners because one of my first corals was a neon green hairy mushroom and it was easy to keep and interesting to have.

I have a rock of yuma mushrooms that just survived everything my tank could throw at them even a algae take over. All of sudden now they are growing and propagating like crazy. I love my mushrooms great colors like everyone says they can take over. I think its really a time thing though.
