I say other. Any level of reef hobbyist can be successful with mushrooms. They can be colorful, grow fast even in less than ideal conditions, and are easy to propagate.

On the other hand:
1. Not super friendly to some other corals.
2. If or when they die they pollute a tank, fast.
3. When they take off they spread like a disease and you can't control where they move to.
4. If you feed them they have awful table manners.

So. Everyone CAN grow them. Not everyone should. I don't, though I once did enjoy having them in my old system.

would let a couple of those take over a tank anytime - like the old song, "you can just keep on using me... until you use me up."

I say no because they can take over and are too hard to control. An LPS or SPS I can pretty much remove the whole colony if needed as well with softies such as leathers. With mushrooms if they spread its hard to control short of removing any rock they are attached to. I'll be pulling this rock in the near future before they infest the entire tank.

The beauty of mushrooms as to the question is they are perfect for beginners to learn. I know first hand. They let you know right away if they ere not happy not slowly die as others do, and you not knowing what to do to turn it around. The lighting is very minimal, the flow is very little. Not pure bread fussy coral. You get to know what coral need , and then learn, and advance. They are also more forgiving to your mistakes, and g forbid lack of maintenance thus encouraging new people to stay and strengthen our hobby

I wish I knew how easy Mushrooms, Discosoma were to keep when I started the hobby. They are perfect for a low maintenance Pico Reef that you want to display for your family.

My 1st coral was a mushroom rock.
Just like any coral. High end and low end. Middle market. Ect. Usually the higher price means more colors and harder to keep alive but not always. Lol. Wish I was more help

I take most everything off their plugs. Mushrooms can be a little bit of a challenge to get back on a rock without damaging. My only con… great coral otherwise
and I think someone said it best, a little more time with them is needed to keep them in check.
