Today let's talk fragging coral and frag systems!

If you're new to this and don't know what fragging is well "fragging" a coral is the slang term for propagating a coral. Basically cutting it in half or pieces in order for each piece to grow into it's own colony. That's the revhtree definition!

I don't necessarily LIKE fragging coral myself but I do like populating my frag tank with a bunch of frags. LOL! But then again I HATE to ship coral but if it involves a good trade then I'll go the extra mile! HA! :)

Anyway let me ask you a few questions and then post a photo of your frag system!

1. Have you ever fragged your own corals?

2. Do you enjoy fragging corals and why or why not?

3. What size frag system do you have?

4. Do you have a photo of your frag system? Please post it!

I only frag if I have to. I still like doing it. I view it more as pruning that fragging.

I've had to frag it twice. Now that I got a bigger tank itbe allowed to grow out.

I love fragging, but I really love big colonies too. I'm not chopping for the sake of chopping.

My system is a 50 gallon lowboy with a 55 gallon sump

I mostly use this tank for coral overflow. It's actually pretty full now - fuller then above pictures. Not really sure what I will do since I won't be selling frags anytime soon. I have lost of fast growing corals and when they have to be cut I put them in here. When I get new corals I can semi qt and monitor them in here. I see posts all the time about people asking how to exterminate pom pom xenia. Last time I took some to an LFS I got almost $400 credit for it and while it grew out it filtered this system as well.

I do occasionally use a band saw for cutting LPS but many of these corals are just cut with knifes and scissors. Bone cutters too are sometimes used.

Maybe this answers that question.

I dont like fragging. I was going to do a little side thing to keep funding the hobby but it felt like a job. I started to lose interest in the hobby so I stopped maintaining the frag tank.

I love my display and all but nothing beats hands on fun. My little garden getting lots of TLC these days!
30G deep blue, hooked to display, sharing same sump.
It’s calming , addicting , pays for my hobby and when I’m not lazy, push a sale, make some money, but wife something nice and always upgrade the coral! I’m 15 years into the hobby and still feel like I know nothing. I just keep in swimming.

Almost forgot... Trading! I buy my share of coral but that money comes from me selling a few pieces(only). Trading is something I’ve been doing more and more of but it took me a while to work my way up to premium corals. Now that I have a handful of quality pieces I’m trading , getting corals I never could have paid for. I’m trading those soon for pieces I never dreamed I’d own but now in reach!

Here’s my high end sps and zoa frag system and grow out I’m currently building. 2 60g frag tanks on a custom bashsea 72x18x18 sump total water volume will be 240g. I love fragging and find it enjoyable. I do it to share my collection with others.

Now, I said no to both, but that is not wholly true. I have a "frag" tank that is actually a qt for corals and clams. It houses corals not ready for my dt or that go into the traveling tank.
Now, I have to frag corals when they grow too large, but I do not particularly care for doing it.

Part of caring for animals. :)

I’m in the process of connecting one to the DT and re-doing the plumbing and sump arrangement for the DT. Soon as ‘rona runs its course and I can not feel guilty going to Lowe’s for plumbing stuff. Will also include a lower section for phyto growing. Hence the blinding glow.

No, but it really comes down to space. My house is over 120 years old; right now we only have room for a 30 gallon tank. The idea of a frag tank is cool, but there would be nowhere to put it.

I really don't frag for the sake of it... only create frags by accident or when it's necessary. Moving a coral, maybe I need to prune a large colony, etc. Luckily, I've got a connected "lagoon" where I can keep a number of frags if necessary. I don't like having a frag rack in my DT but sometimes that is necessary when I have too many corals.

I prune when necessary and take to my LFS when it is a significant sized piece...smaller pieces are just disposed of...can't stand the look of little bits of coral scattered around the display

Can I combine/add my frag tank with my show tank and sump? In my Newbie mind that would give me more volume to my show tank system, and frag tank would get benefits of my stable aged show tank and sump as well??? Plus share the expense of my Apex, Trident and DOS, etc.

Thinking of adding a Frag Tank literally this month! Great string.

I have run a frag tank hooked to my main system in the past. When all was mature and I had to trim a lot. Then I would give it away when healed (some sold to LFS). Works fine.

Answered never fragged a coral....on purpose. I hope to have dedicated frag tank someday. I would really like to grow high end corals for reasonable prices to sell to local reefers.

Sure can, that's what I did. All of the benefits you mentioned are why. Basically just needed another return pump for the frag tank to tie it into the existing system.

The only downside I've experienced is any time you need to dose something to treat a problem, you have to dose for the entire system volume. Can add up for some things. And if you somehow got a pest in one tank, it will be spread to all of the tanks and be a much bigger problem to fix. That all being said, I'm very happy I've added my frag tank to my display system.

Been planning and measuring for a frag tank addition recently so it’s nice to see this thread/topic pop up.

With a 92 Corner (quarter circle) there’s not a lot of room under the cabinet for equipment, especially bell and whistle items. Currently my ATO reservoir sits beside the cabinet. I know it could be hidden inside a simple storage cabinet or something similar to an A/V cabinet like people use for controller mounting, and the aforementioned bell and whistle equip.

However.... I voted and think another tank that I can plumb to the existing sump and use its cabinet for added equipment is the “best option” for all intents and purposes! Hahaha I think most all of us tell ourselves things like this to get another tank! Also the “But honey I can sell or trade the frags to help pay for the hobby” 6 months later you’re being filmed for “Hoarders: Live Animal Edition”

Keep the pics of your frag systems coming please!

I like to frag corals to sell and trade.
I have 30 and 40 gallon frag tanks plumbed to a large rubbermade sump. Might be what I like best about the hobby. Collecting, selling, and trading all the different coral. Watching frags grow out and sometimes look different that the mother colony cause something in the frag system is just a little bit different.
