Hi All,

I just got back into the hobby after a 20 plus year break!! The spark was the recent the purchase of a 30 Gallon freshwater tank for my eight-year-olds birthday!! For the last three months I have been researching daily and sent myself back to reef school. I am now going to build a custom 240 gallon tank for the perfect spot in my basement, the set up will have the tank half exposed with access to the back, front and sides. I will have a mini fish room, with RODI and access to the tank. Dimensions are currently 72 X 24 X 30. After thorough research and looking at multiple manufactures and tanks in person. I am going to go the custom route, as the stand and canopy will be most pleasing to my better half, and better protection for the tank. I have narrowed it down to either a tank from Glass Cages or Custom Aquariums. Any feedback on either of those manufacturers would be great, especially CA. As I am leaning in that direction. Also have some questions about the H2O overflows and number of them needed for optimal flow. I am thinking for the CA tank of going with one Stealth boxes and H20 0verflows for a base of 3600 GPH. The tank is 200 gallons, sump 39, so I think this is sufficient for what I am trying to achieve.

Here is current build list

Tank CA or GC - 72 x 24 x30

1 X 3600 Stealthbox Overflow - if CA build

Custom Stand 30 inch/ 12 inch Canopy

Sump - Trigger Sapphire 44

2 x Siice 4.0 Return Pumps

3 x Vivaspectra 300 W

Skimmer - RSK 600

This is what I have made decisions on thus far. Any input on the black box light options would also be helpful. Since the build is going to be costly, I thought lights to be the one area I could save a few bucks on. Kessil set up is $1800 or more for this tank vs. $500 for black box's.

Look forward to everyone's feedback!!

Lights are not where you want to skimp. You have time… watch the for sale forum and buy some used A360X instead. You can easily find three of them for less than $1000.

Look into Planet Aquariums for the tank instead if you want to save. I have the same size tank and paid $1200 two years ago. I built my own stand.

Cool thanks for the info. Was actually checking out CDA as well. The stand you built is a work of art! I am not handy at all and wish I could make the stand. Orginal Idea was get a steel stand and then have my contractor build wall around it etc. But after I stepped backed and assesed the situation, it was way more cost effective to get a tank with stand, and then only have to build one side of it.

THANK YOU !!! Yeah for sure..No rush...it is a big tank. The fishroom will take a few weeks to hammer out. I got the supplier of the tank helping me with the build. I am a newbie to reef tanks. Have had Freshwater for over 10 years. Finally have the time and funds to do it right..

An update as the last few months have been a waiting to get the tank delivered, safely transported to my basement, and set up. We are finally at the cycle stage!! Took two weeks to install the "Velvet Reef". Here are some pictures from the last week or so.
